Looker Studio Alternatives for Founders and Small Teams

Looker Studio is where a lot of founders build their first dashboard. It’s free, it plugs straight into Google Analytics, and since April it’s called Data Studio again. Google announced the rename on April 11, 2026, so if the logo changed under you, that’s why.

The reasons people look for something else didn’t change with the name. Every chart is a box you drag out and wire up by hand. Anything outside Google’s own products goes through a community connector, and Google’s docs say those may cost money. And the report you spent a Saturday on turns into a tab you never open, because nothing on it tells you what to do before lunch.

This guide is for founders and small teams who want a dashboard they actually look at. The pick is Context Board, which we make. Your AI agent builds it from a sentence, with your revenue, traffic, search and agents on one live board, for $6 a month. After it come six real alternatives, priced on each vendor’s own site on October 15, 2026.

Quick answer
  • Context Board is the pick for founders. A live board you build by asking Claude, ChatGPT or Claude Code, with Google Analytics, Search Console, Stripe and the rest of your tools on one plan. Free for 3 days, then $6 a month.
  • Databox is the closest KPI tool to Looker Studio, with 130+ integrations and a free plan capped at 3 data sources. Paid starts at $89 a month.
  • Geckoboard puts team KPIs on an office TV, from $99 a month.
  • Metabase is free and open source if your numbers live in a database and you can host it.
  • Notion, Power BI and Klipfolio fit narrower jobs. Charts inside your docs, full BI modeling, and scheduled PDF reports for clients.

Why founders leave Looker Studio

Looker Studio, now Data Studio, is a report builder. That’s its strength and the reason it wears founders out.

  • You build every chart: pick a data source, a dimension, a metric and a chart type, then style it. Twelve charts is twelve rounds of that.
  • Non-Google data costs extra: Google’s own connectors are free. For Stripe and most other SaaS tools you use a community connector, and per Google’s data source docs, those may cost money to use.
  • It’s built for reports you send: the free version can email a report on a schedule, once a day at most. That’s a monthly-client-report tool, and a founder’s day runs on what moved this morning.

None of that makes it bad. It makes it the wrong shape for one person who wants to glance at the business between other work.

1. Context Board: a live board your agent builds

Best for: founders and small teams who want revenue, traffic and search on one screen they open every day, without building charts by hand.

Context Board is a web app at board.contextbolt.com. It’s ours, so weigh the bias. The big difference from Looker Studio is who does the building. You add the board to Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Codex or Cursor over MCP, sign in with an Allow page, and ask.

“Put my Google Analytics users for the last 90 days top left, Search Console clicks beside it, my top queries underneath, and Stripe MRR on the right.”

Your agent reads the board, checks what you’ve connected, adds the widgets and connects the sources. If a widget has no data yet, it says in a sentence how it gets its numbers. It never makes one up. Prefer to click? The gallery has numbers with sparklines, charts, bars, lists, tables, goals, to-dos, notes, countdowns and calendars, and every form shows what the widget will say before anything is added.

An example Context Board named Marketing. Every number on it is example data.

The two Google sources a founder’s Looker Studio report usually starts from are built in. Google Analytics 4 and Search Console sign in with Google, read only. GA4 gives users, sessions, views, top pages, channels, countries and a world map. Search Console gives clicks, impressions, CTR, position and top queries and pages, from 7 to 480 days back.

The rest of a founder’s numbers come on the same plan. Stripe, PostHog, Linear, Notion, Sentry, Supabase and Vercel sign in through their own MCP servers. Lemon Squeezy, Plausible, beehiiv, Buttondown and YouTube take a key you save once. Any JSON API, RSS feed or calendar works too. Connections only read, and keys are sealed on the server and never sent back.

Two more things matter once you live with it. If you build with Claude Code or Codex, a small runner on your computer shows what is left of each plan’s five-hour window and week, and every session that is waiting on you. And when a source fails, the widget keeps its last good value and says what went wrong and when. It never shows a number it did not receive.

Sources stay live while the board is open. You can have several boards, share any of them as a read-only view, and pick a theme, from photo scenes to Tokyo Night and Nord, or ask your agent to make one.

Price: free for 3 days, then $6 a month. One plan with every connection, widget and theme.

Verdict: the pick for a founder. It’s the dashboard you’d open anyway, built in a sentence, for less than any paid plan below. The Context Board vs Looker Studio page goes line by line.

2. Databox: KPIs and goals across many tools

Best for: marketing teams and agencies tracking goals across a long list of tools.

Databox is the closest fit to what Looker Studio does for marketing numbers. It connects to 130+ tools, spreadsheets, databases and APIs, and it has goals and anomaly detection on every plan.

The free plan is real but small. One user, 3 data sources, one dashboard and a daily sync. Analyst is $89 a month, or $71 billed annually, for one user, 5 data sources, unlimited dashboards and an hourly sync. Sharing and notifications start on Team Core, at $249 a month for 3 users. Its MCP server, for asking Claude or ChatGPT about your Databox data, starts on Analyst.

Verdict: a strong KPI tool for a marketing team with many sources to watch. For one founder, its free plan stops at three sources, and Context Board does the same glance for $6, built by your agent, with your Claude Code limits beside it. See Context Board vs Databox.

3. Geckoboard: KPIs on an office TV

Best for: teams that want sales or support numbers on a screen everyone can see.

Geckoboard turns live data from HubSpot, Zendesk, Salesforce and 90+ tools into dashboards for TVs, Slack, Microsoft Teams and email. Essentials is $99 a month, or $79 billed annually, with 2 dashboards, one editor and one screen, then extra for each. It can post scheduled snapshots to Slack, Teams or email. Threshold alerts start on Performance, at $399 a month.

There’s no free plan, but there’s a 14-day trial, and every plan includes a read-only metrics MCP server.

Verdict: the right tool for a wall screen in a sales or support room. A founder working alone is paying for screens and editors nobody else uses, where Context Board gives the same live numbers to one person for $6. See Context Board vs Geckoboard.

4. Metabase: questions over your own database

Best for: technical teams whose numbers live in Postgres or MySQL and who are happy to write a query.

Metabase is open source, and self-hosting it is free with unlimited users. Its cloud Starter plan is $100 a month with five users included, then $6 per user. Pro is $575 a month. Dashboards can be sent by email or Slack on a schedule, alerts are built in, and an MCP server comes on every plan.

It’s the best free option on this page if you can run a server.

Verdict: great when the question is “what does my database say”. A founder’s dashboard usually mixes the database with Stripe, Google Analytics and Search Console, which is where Context Board starts. It reads Supabase through Supabase’s own MCP server, beside everything else.

5. Notion: charts inside your docs

Best for: small teams that already run everything in Notion.

Notion charts turn a Notion database into a bar, line, donut or number chart. Everyone on a paid plan gets unlimited charts, and the Free plan can try one. Plus is $12 per seat a month, or $10 billed yearly. Full dashboard views are on Business, at $24 per seat a month.

Charts are drawn from Notion databases, so the numbers have to be in Notion first. That’s fine for a content calendar and awkward for revenue or traffic.

Verdict: good for charts about work that already lives in Notion. Context Board reads your Notion pages and databases too, and puts them beside your revenue and traffic.

6. Microsoft Power BI: full BI modeling

Best for: analysts in a Microsoft 365 company who need data models, joins and measures.

Power BI is a full business intelligence platform. Power BI Desktop is a free download. Sharing reports needs Pro, at $14 per user a month paid yearly, or Premium Per User at $24. Microsoft also ships an authoring MCP server, so an agent can help build reports.

It does far more than Looker Studio, and asks far more of you. Modeling data is a skill of its own.

Verdict: the right call when a company runs on Microsoft and needs real BI. For a founder who wants today’s numbers, it’s a second job.

7. Klipfolio: scheduled PDF reports for clients

Best for: agencies sending clients dashboard snapshots on a schedule.

Klipfolio Klips is a spreadsheet-style dashboard tool with 130+ integrations and unlimited users on every plan. Base is $140 a month, or $120 billed annually, for 3 dashboards refreshed every 4 hours, with PDF reports included. Scheduled email reports start on Grow, at $220 a month. Its sister product, PowerMetrics, has an MCP server on its Professional plan.

Verdict: a reporting tool for people who send reports. A founder reading their own numbers gets them live, and for $6, on Context Board. See Context Board vs Klipfolio.

Where Looker Studio still fits

Data Studio is still free, and that matters. Google’s pricing page says it costs nothing for creators and viewers, and Pro is $9 per user per project per month for team workspaces, up to 200 delivery schedules per report, and Gemini. Even the free version emails a report on a schedule.

So if your dashboard’s real job is a monthly report to a client, or a Google Ads table someone else reads, keep it there. Context Board is a live board you open rather than a report you send. It doesn’t email PDFs, so that job stays with Data Studio.

If you’re a founder checking your own numbers, that was never the job. You want to see this morning’s signups, this week’s clicks, and whether the agent you left running needs you.

How to choose

  • If you run the business and want one screen you’ll actually open, pick Context Board. Ask your agent to build it, and it’s $6 a month after a 3-day trial.
  • If you’re a marketing team watching goals across many tools, Databox is the closest to Looker Studio.
  • If the numbers are for a TV in the office, Geckoboard.
  • If they live in your database and you write SQL, Metabase, self-hosted for free.
  • If the team already lives in Notion, its charts cover the work tracked there.
  • If you need data models and DAX, Power BI.
  • If you send clients PDFs, Klipfolio, or stay on Data Studio.

Most founders on this page don’t need BI. They need to stop opening five tabs every morning. If you build with Claude Code too, the Claude Code dashboard guide shows how your agent builds the board and keeps your plan limits on it, and how to check your Claude Code usage covers the limits on their own.
