Why freelancers skip the CRM

Full CRMs are built for sales teams, so they come with seats, email sync and sequences. A freelancer has twelve clients, not twelve hundred. So the list ends up in an inbox, a notes app and a spreadsheet. The spreadsheet holds the names and amounts, but it never says who to chase today. A proposal sent on Monday has no date on it, and nobody follows up until the client goes quiet. And the call notes only get written if you remember to type them in.

How to set up a freelance CRM

  1. Make a Client pipeline In the board's pill, choose New board, then Client pipeline. It starts with Lead, Talking, Proposal sent and Won, with Open pipeline and Won this quarter beside the deals.
  2. Add your clients Press New deal for a company or a contact, with a value, a next step and a date. Or import the spreadsheet you already have: More, then Import deals from CSV.
  3. Let your agent log the calls Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Codex, or use the chat in the board. Say "log my call with Priya, follow up Thursday" and the call, the step and the date are saved.

What is the simplest CRM for a freelancer?

A spreadsheet with a row per client, a next step and a date works while you have a handful of clients. As it grows, nothing in it tells you who to chase today. The Client pipeline on Context Board is the same list as columns and cards, with a follow-up count for what is late, due today or has no next step.

Can I import my clients from a spreadsheet?

Yes. Save the sheet as a CSV, then choose More, then Import deals from CSV. The first row names the columns: Company, Contact, Email, Phone, Value, Stage, Next step and Date work, and so do usual names like Amount. A row needs a company or a contact. A stage your pipeline doesn't have goes to the first column. Files can be up to 2 MB, and an import can be undone. More also downloads your deals as a CSV.

Can my AI agent update the pipeline?

Yes. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and any app that speaks MCP can connect, and so can the chat in the board. They read a deal with read_deal and change it with write_deal. One request can add a deal, log a call, email or meeting, set the next step and date, move it, or mark it won or lost. Your agent can rename the columns too. Steps are in Your AI and your computers.

Is my client list private?

A client pipeline holds other people's names and contact details, so it can't be shared by link, unlike a canvas, a doc or a sheet. A deal your agent removes goes to the trash, where you can restore it for 30 days.

Does it sync my email or send messages?

No. A deal keeps an email address and a phone number, and its Email and Call buttons open your own mail and phone apps. What was said goes in the deal's history, typed by you or logged by your agent. If you need inbox sync or automated sequences, a full CRM does that.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in your phone's browser, with no app to install. The columns become tabs along the top, Follow up is a tab of its own, and a deal opens over the list. New deal sits at the foot.
