How Claude’s usage limits work
Every paid plan has two, and the checker draws one ring for each. Anthropic does not publish them as message counts, so what is left is a share of each.
The session limit resets every five hours. It is the loud one. It stops you in the middle of a task, then comes back within five hours.
The weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week that Anthropic assigns to your account. It is the quiet one. Run it out on a Thursday and nothing comes back until your reset day.
- Shared with Claude chat: claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code all count against the same limits, so the rings include your chats.
- A model’s own week: Max plans also have a separate weekly limit for Fable. When your file has one, it shows as a small ring under the other two.
Keep these rings live on Context Board
This page reads one file, once. Context Board keeps the same rings on screen for Claude Code and Codex, beside the sessions that are waiting for you.

How do I check my Claude usage?
In Claude Code, type /usage. On a Pro or Max plan it shows bars for your plan's limits. On the web or in Claude Desktop, open Settings, then Usage, at claude.ai/settings/usage. This checker shows the same limits from the copy Claude Code keeps in .claude.json, with nothing to install.
Is my .claude.json uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is opened by JavaScript in your own tab, and the checker keeps one entry from it, your usage. Nothing is uploaded or stored, and the rest of the file, your account details included, is ignored. Like every page on this site, this one loads fonts and analytics, and none of those requests carries anything from your file. Once the page has loaded, the checker works with your internet off. What the site collects is on our privacy page.
Where is .claude.json?
In your home folder, next to the .claude folder rather than inside it. That is ~/.claude.json on macOS and Linux, and C:\Users\you\.claude.json on Windows. The leading dot hides it. In a Mac file picker, Cmd+Shift+. shows hidden files. On Linux, Ctrl+H does. If you set CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, the file is in that folder instead.
Why does it say Claude Code has not saved a reading?
Claude Code writes your limits into .claude.json when it checks them with Anthropic. Type /usage in Claude Code, then pick the file again. If /usage shows no plan bars, for example because Claude Code is using an API key, there are no plan limits for it to save.
Are Claude Code limits shared with Claude chat?
Yes. Anthropic says usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limits, and Claude Code in VS Code or JetBrains counts too. An afternoon of long chats leaves less for Claude Code that evening. How to check Claude Code usage covers how the limits work.
Does it count tokens or cost, like ccusage?
No. It shows how much of your plan's limits is left and when each resets, which is what Anthropic counts on Pro and Max. ccusage reads Claude Code's logs and reports tokens and an estimated cost, which matters more on the API. Context Board vs ccusage sets the two side by side.
