Why MCP servers are hard to keep track of

Claude Code keeps servers for you alone in one folder, for your team in a project's .mcp.json, and for every project at once. claude.ai connectors and plugins add their own. Codex keeps a separate list, plus the apps on your ChatGPT account. claude mcp list checks one folder on one computer. codex mcp list only reads the file, so a server that can't even start still says enabled. Often the first you hear of a broken server is a tool call failing halfway through a task.

How to see every MCP server

  1. Link your computer In Connect, copy the one line for your computer and run it once. The runner it sets up reads Claude Code and Codex there. Do the same on each computer you work on.
  2. Add the Connections widget Pick Connections from the gallery, or ask your agent to add it. It counts every server and connection, and says how many need you.
  3. Fix what needs you Open it. Failing servers, sign-ins and doubled-up servers come first, each with its fix ready to copy, like claude mcp login "sentry".

Why manage them on Context Board

Both agents, every computerClaude Code and Codex on your laptop, your desktop and a server, in one list. Grouped by where each server comes from, with a search box.
It knows what startsEach server is checked the way a new session checks it, so one that fails says so here first. Not halfway through a task.
Your keys stay homeKeys, tokens and passwords are stripped on your computer, then again on the board. You see names, states and the fix. Never the secret.

How do I see all my MCP servers in Claude Code?

Run claude mcp list in a terminal. It checks every server Claude Code can reach from that folder and prints each one's state, like Connected, Needs authentication or Failed to connect. To see Claude Code and Codex on every computer at once, add the Connections widget to Context Board.

Does Context Board see my API keys?

No. The runner strips keys, tokens, passwords and headers before anything leaves your computer, and the board strips anything that looks like a secret again when it arrives. A server's address shows as its domain, and a program shows as its name and package.

Can it remove or change a server?

Not your agents' servers. For those it shows the command to run, like claude mcp remove "old-db" -s user or codex mcp remove "old-db", with a button to copy it, and you run it on that computer. A claude.ai connector or ChatGPT app gets a link to where it's managed instead. The board's own connections and keys you can sign in to again, remove or revoke from the same view.

Which agents and apps does it read?

Claude Code and Codex, including claude.ai connectors, plugins, a project's .mcp.json and the apps on the ChatGPT account Codex uses. It doesn't read Cursor, VS Code or Claude Desktop.

Does it start my project's MCP servers?

No. A project's .mcp.json can run programs on your computer, so the board reads project servers from the file and marks them Not checked. Claude Code only runs them once you approve them in that folder.

How often does it check?

Every six hours while your computer is on and the widget is on one of your boards, and whenever you press Look again. A computer that's off keeps what it last read, and says when.
