ON ONE BOARD

Why a PowerPoint is hard to reuse as text

A deck is made to be shown, not read as text. Copying out of PowerPoint one slide at a time puts the titles, bullets, tables and speaker notes in different places, and you rebuild the order by hand. Free converters like Microsoft's MarkItDown run from the command line and hand you a Markdown file, with no way to check it against the slides. So the Markdown and the real deck drift apart, and your agent only ever sees one of them.

How to convert a PowerPoint to Markdown

  1. Bring in your .pptx At board.contextbolt.com, choose New board, then the Import row under the board kinds, and drop the file. On an open Slides board, use the ⋯ menu and Import a PowerPoint, or drop the file on the deck.
  2. Check the slides The deck opens as it looked, with your speaker notes under each slide. Anything the board couldn't bring over is listed by slide. Edit a title, fix a bullet, or present it with P.
  3. Download the Markdown Open the ⋯ menu and choose Markdown under Download. You get one .md file named after the board, with every slide between --- lines. Or leave it on the board and let your agent read it.

Why convert on Context Board

The deck comes in as it lookedText boxes stay where they were, with their sizes, fonts and colors. Shapes, pictures, tables, charts, backgrounds and speaker notes come too. A font the board lacks becomes the nearest one it has, and it tells you which.
Markdown that keeps the structureEach slide starts with a # title and holds its bullets. A table is a Markdown table, a chart's data is a table too, and your speaker notes sit on a Note: line. Paste it back with Paste a Markdown deck.
Your agent can use the deckClaude Code, Codex or any app connected over MCP reads the whole deck with read_slides and edits it with write_slides. Ask it to tighten the wording, summarize it or draft the next deck.

How do I convert a PowerPoint to Markdown for free?

Run Microsoft's open-source MarkItDown. Its README lists PowerPoint among its formats and gives the install as pip install 'markitdown[pptx]', then markitdown deck.pptx -o deck.md. You get a Markdown file and nothing else. If you also want to edit and present the deck and let your agent read it, import the .pptx into a Slides board on Context Board and download the Markdown from there.

What does the Markdown file contain?

Slides sit between --- lines. Each one opens with a line naming its layout, then a # title, then its text as paragraphs, bullets, numbered lists, bold, italic and links. A two-column slide puts its second column under ::right::. Tables are Markdown tables, a chart's data is written as a table, and speaker notes come on a Note: line.

Are the pictures in the Markdown file?

No. The file doesn't carry the images. Each picture is a line with a link to it on your board. If you need the image files themselves, take them from the original .pptx.

Does everything in the PowerPoint come over?

Text boxes, shapes, lines, pictures, tables, charts of the kinds the board draws, backgrounds, speaker notes, and the deck's theme colors and fonts do. Animations that made things appear become builds on a click, and slide transitions become the nearest of fade, push or zoom. Video and sound don't come over, and a video keeps its first frame as a picture. After the import, the board lists what changed, slide by slide.

How big a file can I import, and which formats?

A .pptx up to 200 MB, and the first 400 slides of it. An old .ppt, a Keynote file or an .odp has to be saved as .pptx first. From Google Slides, choose File, Download, Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx).

Will the Markdown read as plain text?

Often, not always. A title and a plain list of bullets come out as ordinary Markdown. Text with its own sizes, colors or fonts, or bullets two levels deep, stays in a text box, and the file writes that box as a comment line with its words inside. Shapes and pictures are comment lines too. Your agent reads them without trouble. If you want clean text, tidy that slide on the board first or ask your agent to.
