Why an Obsidian vault is stuck on one computer

An Obsidian vault is a folder of Markdown files on one computer. Obsidian is the app that opens it. Obsidian's Web viewer plugin is for websites: it opens external links inside Obsidian on desktop. Obsidian Publish turns selected notes into an online site, which is a different job from reading your own vault. And when Claude Code or Codex works in the folder, you read what it wrote in a separate app.

How to open your vault in a browser

  1. Link your computer In Connect, copy the one line for the computer your vault is on and run it once. It installs the runner, a small program that reads your folders and starts with the computer.
  2. Choose the vault folder In Connect, add the vault as a project folder, read only or read and write. Then make a Files board and pick that folder.
  3. Read, search and edit Open notes from the tree, follow links, check backlinks, browse tags. Ctrl O opens a note by its name. Click into a note to change it.

Why read your vault on Context Board

Links, backlinks and tags[[Links]] open their notes, and a heading link jumps to the heading. A pane beside the note lists what links to it, with the line each link sits in, plus its tags and neighbours.
Edits write back what you typedClick into a note for a live-preview editor. A second after you stop typing, only the parts you changed go to the file, and the version before is kept on your computer for 30 days.
Your agent works in the same folderClaude Code or Codex editing the vault changes the same files, and the board shows each change at once. The board's chat on your computer knows which note is open.

What is the Obsidian Web viewer?

It is a core plugin in Obsidian that opens external links inside Obsidian on desktop. It shows websites in Obsidian, not your vault in a browser. To open the vault itself in a browser, make a Files board in Context Board.

Does it change my vault?

Opening and reading a note writes nothing. In a folder you chose as read only, notes can't be changed at all. In a read and write folder, ticking a checkbox changes that one character, and typing changes only what you typed. The version before is kept on your computer for 30 days.

Do my wiki links, embeds and properties work?

Links by a note's name, its path or one of its aliases open the note, and ![[embeds]] show pictures, PDFs and other notes. Callouts, ==highlights==, #tags and the properties at the top of a note are drawn too. A link to a note that doesn't exist yet offers to make it in a read and write folder. It doesn't run Obsidian plugins, and the links view shows one note's neighbours, not the whole vault.

Can I read it on my phone?

Yes, in the phone's browser, with no app. The notes are still read from your computer, so it needs to be on.

Is my vault uploaded or shared?

The board keeps no copy of your notes. The runner on your computer sends a note to your browser tab when you open it, and the board stores none of it. With the computer off, the board says so. A Files board is never shared by link, because the notes live on your computer.

Can I put a copy of my vault on the board?

Yes. In Import, drop the vault's folder or a .zip of it, and it becomes a doc board: folders as pages, wiki links as page links, pictures that notes show kept, and properties as one line at the top of a page. PDFs and pictures no note shows are left out, and the dialog lists what it skipped. Your vault isn't touched, a doc board can be shared by link to read, and your agent can find a note in it with search_boards.
