Reddit MCP: Which Servers Still Work as the API Closes

A Reddit MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or another AI agent read Reddit for you: it searches posts, opens a thread with its comments and pulls a subreddit’s top posts. Most of them need Reddit API keys, and Reddit stopped accepting new requests for API access on October 31, 2026.

Reddit’s timeline, posted on r/redditdev on September 30, closes public API access for every remaining app in March 2027. It also switches off RSS feeds on November 13, 2026, and RSS is the fallback several key-less servers lean on. So the useful question in November 2026 is which server still works for you now, and which one will still work in the spring.

We read the setup notes and code of seven Reddit MCP servers on GitHub and asked Reddit for data from our own server on November 3. One job comes through the shutdown untouched: giving Claude the posts you saved yourself, which your browser can already open.

Quick answer
  • Most Reddit MCP servers need API keys for search, full threads and user history. Reddit took its last new requests for API access on October 31, 2026.
  • Public API access ends in March 2027. Reddit starts cutting off unregistered apps on January 12, 2027, and RSS feeds stop on November 13, 2026.
  • Key-less routes are thin. From our server on November 3, Reddit answered every logged-out JSON request with HTTP 403 and allowed about one RSS request a minute.
  • Pick by what you hold. Keys from before the cutoff: reddit-mcp-buddy or reddit-mcp-server. No keys: reddit-mcp-server’s archive mode, with scores that lag.
  • Your own saves need no key. ContextBolt copies the Reddit posts you saved from your signed-in browser, and on Pro, Claude searches them over MCP.

What a Reddit MCP server does

MCP is the open standard that lets an AI app call another product’s tools mid-conversation. If the term is new, our plain explanation of MCP covers it in a few minutes. A Reddit MCP server is a small program on your computer that turns Reddit into tools Claude can call, so you can ask “what do people in r/ClaudeAI say about Cursor this month?” and get an answer built from the threads.

The servers differ in names and extras, and they cover the same handful of jobs. What each job needs from Reddit today decides whether it still works.

What you ask ClaudeWhat the server callsWhat it needs now
”Search Reddit for reviews of this tool”Site-wide or subreddit searchAPI keys, or an archive copy
”Summarize this thread and its top comments”Post details with the comment treeAPI keys, or an archive copy
”What is hot in r/startups today?”A subreddit listingRSS until November 13, then keys
”Show me what I saved”Your saved postsKeys plus your Reddit password
”Post this to r/SaaS”Create post or commentKeys plus your Reddit password

The thread-reading job is the one people install these servers for. A good answer on Reddit is often a lightly upvoted reply three levels down, and an agent that reads the whole comment tree finds it where a search engine snippet cannot.

Reddit’s API timeline: what closes and when

Reddit is moving outside apps onto its Developer Platform, called Devvit, where the code runs on Reddit’s own servers. The dates below come from Reddit’s r/redditdev announcement and its r/modnews post, both from September 30, 2026, read on November 3.

DateWhat Reddit says happens
October 31, 2026New requests for public API access are no longer accepted
November 13, 2026RSS feeds stop
November 30, 2026Registration closes for the migration bounty
January 12, 2027API access starts to close for apps and users that have not registered or answered Reddit’s outreach
March 2027Public access closes for all remaining apps and users

Reddit says over 14,000 apps and bots have registered, and it is paying $1,000 to eligible apps that finish the move, from a $1M migration program. On RSS, the modnews post is blunt: “If you use RSS for feeds outside of a community you moderate, there is no replacement.” Old Reddit already needs a login, and the same post says Reddit will limit it further to people who used it in the last six months.

For a Reddit MCP server on your laptop, that sets two cases:

  1. You already hold keys. Apps created before Reddit started requiring approval, or approved since, keep working until March 2027. Register the app through the link in Reddit’s announcement before January 12 so it is not cut off early.
  2. You have no keys. You cannot get them now. You are left with what Reddit serves to logged-out visitors, and a third-party archive.

What Reddit sent back to our server on November 3

Several servers skip keys by calling the same addresses a logged-out browser would. We asked Reddit for that data from our own server, a rented cloud machine, on November 3, 2026, and logged what came back.

What we asked forWhat Reddit answered
Top posts in r/mcp as JSON, www.reddit.comHTTP 403, blocked
A thread as JSON, old.reddit.comHTTP 403, blocked
Top posts from the API address, no tokenHTTP 403, blocked
The r/mcp RSS feedHTTP 200, with 0 requests left until a reset 5 to 55 seconds later
A second feed inside that windowHTTP 429, too many requests
That second feed, about a minute laterHTTP 200

The 403s hit the servers that call Reddit’s logged-out API with no keys. Results from a home connection can differ, since Reddit treats networks differently, and one of those servers’ own README says Reddit now blocks unauthenticated requests “from many networks”.

The RSS rows set the pace for anonymous browsing: about one feed a minute from one address. An agent that fires ten requests in a row gets one answer and nine refusals. reddit-mcp-buddy works around that with a 15-minute cache, and its README says sustained anonymous browsing runs slower than 10 requests a minute. On November 13 the feeds go away.

Reddit MCP servers compared

These are the seven servers you meet searching for “reddit mcp”, read on GitHub on November 3, 2026. Stars are a rough measure of use. “Without keys” is what each one does with no Reddit app configured.

reddit-mcp-buddy. The most-starred server, updated November 2, 2026, version 1.2.0 on npm. With no keys it does one thing, browse a subreddit through RSS, plus an offline explainer of Reddit terms. With keys from an approved app it adds search, post details with comments and user analysis. Posting stays off until you switch it on, and then it is capped at 5 posts and 30 comments an hour.

reddit-mcp-server by Jordan Burke. The server with the clearest shutdown plan, updated October 31, 2026. It uses your keys when you have them. Without keys it reads ranked listings from RSS until November 13, and most other reads from Arctic Shift, a free copy of Reddit run by one volunteer. The README says the archive’s scores and comment counts lag, and that the archive itself collects through Reddit’s API, so it may stop getting new posts in March 2027. It is also the one server here with a tool for your saved posts.

The key-less Python servers. adhikasp’s mcp-reddit (last updated May 2025), Hawstein’s mcp-server-reddit and eliasbiondo’s reddit-mcp-server all call the logged-out API when no keys are set. That is the call that returned 403 to our server.

The keys-only servers. Arindam200’s reddit-mcp and GeLi2001’s reddit-mcp both run on PRAW, the Python library for Reddit’s official API, and need a client ID and secret before they start. GeLi2001’s ranks second on Google for “reddit mcp” with 4 stars, and its setup still points new users at Reddit’s app page to create keys, which no longer gets a new user API access.

How to add a Reddit MCP server to Claude

If you hold keys, reddit-mcp-server is the safest pick because it keeps working when a route closes. If you do not, reddit-mcp-buddy’s RSS browsing works until November 13.

  1. Check what you have. Open your Reddit app preferences at reddit.com/prefs/apps and look for an app with a client ID. No app means you are in key-less mode.

  2. Add the server in Claude Code. For browsing with no keys, run the command from reddit-mcp-buddy’s README:

    claude mcp add --transport stdio reddit-mcp-buddy -s user -- npx -y reddit-mcp-buddy
  3. Or add it with your keys. Claude Code passes them to the server with -e:

    claude mcp add reddit -e REDDIT_CLIENT_ID=your_client_id -e REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET=your_client_secret -- npx -y reddit-mcp-server
  4. In Claude Desktop, use the config file. Local servers like these go in claude_desktop_config.json. Leave out the env block if you have no keys, then restart Claude Desktop:

    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "reddit": {
          "command": "npx",
          "args": ["-y", "reddit-mcp-server"],
          "env": {
            "REDDIT_CLIENT_ID": "your_client_id",
            "REDDIT_CLIENT_SECRET": "your_client_secret"
          }
        }
      }
    }
  5. Test it. In Claude Code, run /mcp and check the server shows as connected. Then ask for the top post in r/mcp today. A 403 or 429 in the reply is Reddit refusing the request, and the table above tells you which route hit it.

Each server runs code from npm or PyPI on your machine, so read its README before you install it, the same as any download.

Give Claude your own Reddit saves, with no API key

One job on the list above does not need Reddit’s API at all. Your saved posts are already open to you: reddit.com shows them at reddit.com/user/your-name/saved whenever you are signed in. Reaching them through an MCP server is the hard way, with keys you can no longer request, your Reddit password stored in a config file, and a route that closes in March 2027. Reddit’s password login hands that server your whole account, as reddit-mcp-buddy’s README warns.

ContextBolt takes the browser route. ContextBolt is ours, so weigh the bias. The Chrome extension runs on www.reddit.com after the page loads, reads your saved list with the session you are already signed in with, and copies the text of each saved post and comment into your own library. No Reddit app, no API key and no password go into any settings. It reaches the newest 1,000 saves, which is as far as Reddit’s saved list goes; for older ones, Reddit’s data export and the 1,000-save workarounds are the route.

The ContextBolt dashboard with Reddit saves from r/startups shown beside X and LinkedIn saves, a Reddit tab counting 24 saves, and a search for fundraising advice with matched words highlighted

Reddit saves sit in one library with X and LinkedIn. On Pro, Claude searches this library over MCP.

The first task takes about five minutes:

  1. Add ContextBolt to Chrome from the Reddit saves page, which also shows what it captures.
  2. Open reddit.com in desktop Chrome while signed in. A banner reports the sync, ending in “Sync complete” with the number of new saves.
  3. On Pro, connect Claude. In Claude Desktop or claude.ai, open Customize, then Connectors, then +, then Add custom connector, and paste https://api.contextbolt.app/mcp. In Claude Code, run claude mcp add --transport http contextbolt-bookmarks https://api.contextbolt.app/mcp, then /mcp and choose Authenticate.
  4. Ask for a save. “Search my Reddit saves for the thread about cold email subject lines.” Claude can limit the search to Reddit, or search X, LinkedIn and saved web pages in the same call.

Each result comes back with the poster’s username, the title, the post’s text, the link, its tags and how long ago you saved it. We checked that format on a live Pro library on November 3. Claude cites the thread, and you open the original in one click.

Basic is free and capped at 150 bookmarks, which covers a light saver. Pro is $6 a month: it removes the cap and adds cloud sync and the MCP endpoint Claude connects to. The Claude connection page has every client, including Cursor and Codex. ContextBolt reads what you saved and leaves the rest of Reddit to the servers above, so pair it with one of them if you hold keys.

Frequently asked questions

Something else on your mind? Get in touch.

Is there an official Reddit MCP server?

Reddit publishes one, devvit-mcp, on its GitHub account. It helps you write apps for Reddit's Developer Platform. It does not search Reddit or read threads for you. The servers that do that are community projects on GitHub, such as reddit-mcp-buddy and reddit-mcp-server.

Does a Reddit MCP server need an API key?

For search, full threads and user history, yes, on the servers we read. Reddit stopped accepting new requests for public API access on October 31, 2026, so a new user cannot get keys. Without keys you are left with the logged-out API, which Reddit blocks on many networks, RSS feeds, which Reddit retires on November 13, 2026, or a third-party archive of Reddit posts.

Will Reddit MCP servers stop working in 2027?

The ones built on Reddit's API will lose that route. Reddit says it starts removing API access for unregistered apps and users on January 12, 2027, and closes public access for all remaining apps and users in March 2027. Servers that fall back to an archive keep returning what the archive holds.

Can Claude read my saved Reddit posts?

Yes. reddit-mcp-server has a get_my_saved tool, which needs Reddit API keys plus your Reddit username and password. ContextBolt needs neither: its Chrome extension copies your newest 1,000 saved posts and comments while you browse reddit.com signed in, and on Pro, Claude searches them over MCP.

Can a Reddit MCP server post or comment for me?

Some can, with API keys and your account login. reddit-mcp-buddy keeps posting switched off until you turn it on, then caps it at 5 posts and 30 comments an hour. Reddit's password login gives the server access to your whole account, so treat it as a read tool unless you need to post.
