What this report cannot tell you
It shows what you are losing. It cannot show you why, because that means reading what is sitting above you in the results.
That is what ContextBolt SEO does. Live rank data, SERP reads, and AI answer tracking, inside Claude, Cursor or Codex, on the site you are already working on.
See what is outranking youRanking well is not the same as getting traffic
Position five used to mean a steady stream of clicks. It does not anymore. AI Overviews, featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes now answer the question before anyone reaches your result. You keep the ranking. You lose the visit.
The frustrating part is that Search Console will not tell you this directly. It shows you impressions, clicks and position as three separate numbers. The story is in the relationship between them, and you have to go looking for it.
How the report works
Every ranking position has an expected click-through rate. Position three earns more than position eight. When your actual CTR falls far below what your position should return, something above you took the click.
The report multiplies that gap by your impressions. That gives you one number: the clicks your rankings should have earned and did not.
It then sorts your queries into types. Questions, procedures, comparisons, transactional and navigational. This is the part that changes what you do next, because the loss is almost never spread evenly.
What we found on our own site
We ran this across 15 of our own pages covering 118,408 impressions. Pages that answered a question in one line earned 0.38% CTR at an average position of 6.6. Pages that answered a procedure earned 1.79% at position 9.2.
Worse rankings. 4.7 times better conversion to clicks. The content that ranked best was the content Google no longer needed to send anyone to.
Average organic CTR by Google position in 2026
This is the baseline the report measures you against. All devices, AI Overviews included, from 21.7 million Search Console impressions collected between March 2024 and March 2026.
| Position | Average organic CTR |
|---|---|
| 1 | 27.6% |
| 2 | 12.4% |
| 3 | 6.7% |
| 4 | 4.1% |
| 5 | 2.6% |
| 6 | 2.1% |
| 7 | 1.6% |
| 8 | 1.2% |
| 9 | 0.94% |
| 10 | 0.78% |
These are industry averages and individual results vary. We use the blended figures rather than the higher clean-SERP numbers you will see quoted elsewhere. Curves measured on results pages with no AI Overview put position one near 39.8%, and using those would roughly double every number this report gives you. That would make the tool look more impressive and less true.
The report stops at position 10 because the published data stops at position 10. Anything past that would be extrapolation.
Sources: Visionary Marketing, Google CTR by Position 2026 for the curve. Ahrefs found AI Overviews correlate with a 34.5% click reduction across 300,000 keywords. First Page Sage publishes the clean-SERP comparison.
What to do about it
Rewriting a page that an AI Overview already answers rarely helps. The answer has been given. Nobody needs your version of it.
What works is moving toward queries a one-line answer cannot resolve. Comparisons. Migrations. Platform limits. Anything where the honest answer is that the searcher needs a tool, not a sentence.
Frequently asked questions
A zero-click report reads your Google Search Console data and finds the pages that rank well but earn almost no clicks. It compares your actual click-through rate against what your position should earn, then shows what the gap costs you each month.
Something above your result already answered the question. AI Overviews, featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes all resolve the search inside the results page. Pages that answer a question in one line lose the most.
No. We request read-only, online-only access, so Google never issues us a long-lived token. Your access token builds the report and is then discarded. The report expires after 30 minutes.
Yes. Free, no signup, no account. Connect Search Console with read-only access, get your report, done.
Find out what is sitting above you first. If an AI Overview answers the query, rewriting the page rarely helps. Shifting toward queries a one-line answer cannot resolve, like comparisons, migrations and platform limits, usually recovers more clicks.
