Can Google index it, or has it?

A fetch can show whether Google can index a page. Only Google knows whether it has.

This checker reads what Googlebot reads before it decides: robots.txt, the server's answer, the redirects, the noindex rules and the canonical. If none of them says no, Google can index the page.

Google can still leave it out. It may crawl a page and pass, which Search Console lists as Crawled, currently not indexed, or know the address and not crawl it yet, which is Discovered, currently not indexed. Those are Google's calls, and no outside fetch can see them. URL Inspection can.

The Search Console statuses it checks

Every problem the checker finds is named the way Search Console names it, with our guide where we have one.

  • Blocked by robots.txt Blocks indexing A Disallow rule in robots.txt matches the address, in Googlebot's group or the one for every crawler. Guide
  • Excluded by 'noindex' tag Blocks indexing A noindex in the X-Robots-Tag header, or in a robots or googlebot meta tag. Guide
  • Not found (404) Blocks indexing The server answers 404 or 410, so there is no page to index. Guide
  • Redirect error Blocks indexing A redirect loop, a chain that never ends, or a redirect to an address that is not a web page. Guide
  • Page with redirect Normal if meant The address sends Google to another page, and that page is the one that gets indexed. Guide
  • Alternate page with proper canonical tag Normal if meant The page names another URL as its main version. Guide
  • Blocked due to unauthorized request (401) If Googlebot gets it too The page asks for a login. Guide
  • Blocked due to access forbidden (403) If Googlebot gets it too The server or a firewall refuses the request. Guide
  • Blocked due to other 4xx issue If Googlebot gets it too Any other 4xx error, such as 400 or 405. Guide
  • Server error (5xx) If Googlebot gets it too The server fails instead of sending the page. Guide
  • Duplicate without user-selected canonical Worth a look No canonical tag, so Google picks the main version of any copies itself. Guide
  • Soft 404 Worth a look A page that says "not found" but answers 200. Guide

How do I check if a page is indexed by Google?

Search Google for site: followed by the address, like site:example.com/page. If the page shows up, it is in the index; if it does not, that is a hint, not proof. The certain answer is URL Inspection in Google Search Console, which says whether the page is on Google and, if not, why. Our free Page Insights extension shows the same status in one click. This checker answers the step before that: whether Google can index the page at all.

What does it mean when a URL is not indexable?

Something tells Google not to add it to the index. robots.txt blocks it, the page carries a noindex, the server answers with an error such as 404, the address redirects somewhere else, or its canonical points at another page. Paste the address above to see which one, and the Search Console status it causes.

Does it check for noindex?

Yes. It reads the three places Google looks: the X-Robots-Tag header, the robots meta tag and the googlebot meta tag. A noindex aimed only at another crawler, such as bingbot, does not keep a page out of Google, and the result says so. Excluded by noindex tag covers how to find a noindex you did not mean.

Why does it say it could not read my page?

Usually a firewall or bot protection refused our request. We fetch from a data center under our own name, and many CDNs block that while letting verified Googlebot through. So a 403 to us is not proof of a 403 to Google, and we give no verdict rather than guess. The result says what we received and what Search Console would report if Googlebot got the same.

Does it pretend to be Googlebot?

No. Every request names ContextBolt and links back to this page. Some sites serve Googlebot something different from everyone else, which is one more reason the checker only reports what it actually received.

Can Google index a page that robots.txt blocks?

It can list the bare address, with no description, when other pages link to it. Search Console calls that "Indexed, though blocked by robots.txt". robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing, so to keep a page out of Google, let Google crawl it and use noindex.

Does it run JavaScript?

No. It reads the HTML your server sends, which is what Google reads first. Google renders JavaScript later, so if a page's text only appears with JavaScript, the checker flags it and points you to the rendered view in URL Inspection.

Does it check my whole site?

No. One address at a time, plus your site's robots.txt and the page your canonical names. Results are kept for an hour, and Check again reads the page fresh. ContextBolt SEO can run Search Console's URL Inspection from Claude for each page you ask about.
