The Time MCP server is Anthropic’s official answer to a problem that catches people out constantly: a language model has no clock. Ask an agent what day it is and, without a tool, it will infer something from context or training data and state it with complete confidence. This server hands it the real answer and correct timezone conversion.
What it actually does
Two jobs. It reports the current time in a given timezone, and it converts a time from one named timezone to another. It uses the timezone database on your machine, so daylight saving transitions are handled properly rather than by adding or subtracting a fixed number of hours.
Practical patterns:
- ‘What time is it right now in Tokyo?’
- ‘If the call is 9am in New York, what is that in London next Tuesday?’
- ‘How many hours until 17:00 UTC?‘
Why use it
Almost every scheduling task an agent does depends on knowing the current moment. Drafting a follow-up email, working out whether a deadline has passed, converting a meeting slot for someone in another country. Getting any of those subtly wrong is worse than refusing, because the error is invisible until someone misses a call. This is a small server that closes that gap.
Gotchas
There is not much to go wrong here, which is the point. The one thing worth knowing is that it reflects your machine’s clock and timezone data, so a laptop with the wrong system time will produce confidently wrong answers through the server too. It also only covers time itself, not calendars; for actual availability you want the Google Calendar or Outlook server alongside it.
