You’re in ChatGPT, drafting a landing page or planning a content calendar, and a question interrupts you. Is anyone actually searching for the phrase you just typed, or are you about to write for a term nobody uses? The old answer was to stop, open a new tab, log into a dashboard, run one lookup, and try to remember where you were when you got back.
There’s a better answer now. ChatGPT supports the Model Context Protocol through Developer Mode, a setting that lets it connect to outside tools and data sources and call them mid-conversation. Point that at a live SEO data source and you can ask the keyword question inside the same chat, get a real volume and difficulty number back in seconds, and keep writing.
This guide covers how to wire SEO data into ChatGPT, why Developer Mode specifically is the part that makes it work, what you can actually ask once it’s connected, and what to know about doing SEO this way without a file system underneath you. We write our own copy and do this every day, so this is the workflow as it actually runs, not a feature list.
- Yes, you can do SEO inside ChatGPT. A connected SEO server returns live data right in the chat.
- You need Developer Mode. Settings, then Security and login, then toggle it on. Standard connectors are search and fetch only.
- Plus plan or higher. Free ChatGPT doesn’t support Developer Mode, and it’s web only, not on mobile yet.
- There’s no local file. ChatGPT can’t write to your disk, so research saves to your SEO Board, a live dashboard on your account, instead of a project folder.
- ContextBolt SEO is built for this. A hosted URL you add as a connector, with Ahrefs-grade keyword, SERP, competitor, backlink and AI-visibility data behind it, and every answer saved to your SEO Board. Free for 7 days, then $35 a month.
Why pull SEO data into ChatGPT
The case isn’t “ChatGPT is now an SEO tool”. It’s that the cost of asking an SEO question should be near zero, and for most people doing their own SEO, it still isn’t.
It also isn’t optional. Without a connector, ChatGPT invents search volumes rather than looking them up, and it does it confidently enough that most people never notice.
If you research keywords yourself, you probably use a thin slice of what a full dashboard offers, and only now and then. You want to know if a term is winnable before you commit a headline to it. You want a fast read on what a competitor ranks for. You want to check whether the page you’re about to write matches what people actually search. None of that needs a 40-tab research session in a separate app. It needs one answer, inside the conversation where the question came up, and ChatGPT is already that conversation for a lot of people who write and plan for a living.
The Model Context Protocol, or MCP, is what makes that possible. It’s an open standard, introduced by Anthropic in late 2024, that lets AI applications call external tools and data sources through one common interface. OpenAI added support for it in ChatGPT, and the full version, the one that lets a connector expose more than a couple of fixed tools, sits behind a setting called Developer Mode. Once it’s on, ChatGPT can call an SEO server’s tools mid-conversation the same way Claude or Cursor would.
The payoff is flow. When the answer to “is this keyword soft enough to rank” shows up in the chat you’re already writing in, you ask it. When it lives behind a separate login, you guess instead, and guessing is how a page ends up optimized for a phrase nobody types. If you want the longer argument for why the agent beats the dashboard, the SEO MCP server explainer makes the full case. For the wider field of options, the best SEO MCP servers roundup compares DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Semrush, and ContextBolt SEO.
How do you connect SEO data to ChatGPT?
Use ChatGPT on the web with an account that supports Developer Mode. Start the ContextBolt SEO 7-day free trial or use your existing subscription.
- Open Settings, then Security and login, and enable Developer mode.
- Open Plugins, use the + button, and create a developer-mode app.
- Name it
contextbolt-seo, enterhttps://seo.contextbolt.app/mcpas the MCP URL, and choose OAuth authentication. - Complete the ContextBolt browser sign-in. Enter your SEO account email, enter the email code, and choose Allow connection.
- In a chat, open the + menu, choose Developer mode, and select the app. Ask what SEO tools it has.
OpenAI’s Developer Mode documentation covers availability and workspace controls. If the option is missing, check your account or ask your workspace administrator.
The shared URL needs OAuth. Do not choose No Authentication for it. That setting belongs only to the personal-URL compatibility method described in the connection guide.
ChatGPT may ask you to approve tool calls. Review them, especially when a tool can save or change something. Once connected, the server can supply keyword, SERP, competitor, backlink, and audit data in the same conversation.
What can you actually ask once it’s connected?
This is where it stops being a settings screen and starts being useful. You ask a question, ChatGPT picks the tool, the data comes back in the chat. A few of the moves that come up most.
- Keyword reality checks: “I’m launching a Shopify app for return labels. What should the landing page target?” ChatGPT runs keyword research and returns related terms with volume, difficulty, and intent, so you have a shortlist before you write a sentence.
- Difficulty plus SERP in one ask: “How hard is ‘return label generator’ to rank for, and who’s on page one right now?” It chains a difficulty score with the live top-10 results, so you learn both whether it’s winnable and what kind of page already wins.
- Competitor gaps: “What keywords does Loop Returns rank for that we don’t?” You get a shared-and-missed keyword list, a starting content plan without leaving the chat.
- Search Console quick wins: “Connect my Search Console and tell me what’s almost ranking.” With Search Console linked, ChatGPT reads your real clicks and positions and flags the pages sitting at position 8 to 15, the closest to a page-one jump for the least extra work.
- AI visibility: “When someone asks ChatGPT for a return label tool, do we come up, and who does?” It’s a slightly recursive question to ask ChatGPT about itself, but a real one. ContextBolt SEO’s AI-answer tools check what large language models actually say about your product, a different signal than a Google ranking and one that’s increasingly worth tracking.
- Site audits: “Audit our pricing page.” You get a graded list of issues, thin content, a missing meta description, a broken link, ranked worst first.
The thread through all of these is plain language. You’re not learning a report name or remembering which screen holds which number. You ask the way you’d ask a colleague, and ChatGPT translates it into the right lookup, then the next one if the question needs two.
Where ContextBolt SEO fits
ContextBolt SEO is the one we make, and building a Developer Mode connector for it was a deliberate call, not an afterthought, because a research tool that can only search and fetch isn’t much of a research tool. It’s a hosted MCP server, so there’s no separate account to provision and no API key to juggle. You start the trial, sign in once from the Create form above with an email code, and the tools are in the chat. The plan is $35 a month after a 7-day free trial. The trial needs a card up front and gives you 100 credits to test with; the paid plan runs 1,000 credits a month. It covers keyword research, keyword difficulty, SERP analysis, competitor and backlink data, site audits, a free Google Search Console integration, and the AI-answer tools that check what today’s AI assistants say about your product, and every answer saves to your SEO Board, a live dashboard you can open from any browser.
Here’s the honest difference from Claude Code or Cursor. Both of those can edit the page they just audited, so a fix happens in the same session. ChatGPT has no file system access, so you get the identical graded 0-100 score and the identical fix list, and you take the list to your CMS or hand it to whoever owns the code. That’s the normal shape of the job when the research tool and the build tool are different apps, the same limit Ahrefs and Semrush have inside their own dashboards. What you don’t lose is the research itself. ContextBolt SEO keeps its own record on your account regardless of which client asked, so if you ask about the same keyword again next week, the answer leads with what changed, a volume or difficulty delta, with no extra prompt.
One framing note. The data is Ahrefs-grade, from DataForSEO, the same class of estimates behind plenty of dashboards you already trust, rather than Ahrefs’ own numbers. For deciding what to write next, that’s more than enough.
What to know before you flip Developer Mode
A few things are worth knowing before you set this up.
The Developer Mode requirement itself is a limit worth naming plainly. It’s a Plus-or-higher, web-only setting, so if you’re on the free plan or you live in the ChatGPT mobile app, this workflow isn’t available to you yet. ChatGPT also puts a real warning in front of Developer Mode, because a connector with write access is a bigger surface than a read-only one, and that caution is fair, not just legal boilerplate. Stick to servers you actually trust.
Beyond that, the scope is the same as anywhere else this research runs. Checks run when you ask, plus the daily Search Console snapshots, rather than watching your positions overnight. Site audits crawl up to 50 pages a run. The results collect on your SEO Board, a live dashboard you can open and send, rather than a chart-first explorer, so if you think in charts the chat window will feel sparse at first. ChatGPT itself has no file access, so the fix list is yours to apply, where Claude Code can edit the page it just audited. And a metered connector has a monthly credit budget, which in practice nudges you toward questions that actually change a decision rather than idle curiosity.
What you gain in return is real. A lot of people already draft copy, plan content, and think out loud in ChatGPT, more than in any code editor. Getting live SEO data into that exact window, once, past a setting that takes two minutes to flip, means the research happens where the writing already happens. For most people doing their own SEO without a dedicated tool, that’s worth the one-time setup. The keyword you were nervous about might be wide open, and now you can find out without leaving the chat. Start the 7-day trial, add the connector once, and ask.
