Claude Ultra is the new name for Claude’s $200 plan, the one that used to be Max 20x. On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed it and removed the five-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts. The $100 plan that was Max 5x is now just Max, and it keeps its five-hour limit.
So a long Claude Code run on Ultra no longer stops at the five-hour mark. It still stops when the week runs out. Anthropic’s Ultra article says the plan has “a weekly usage limit that applies across all models, and a separate weekly limit for Fable,” and gives Ultra 10 times Pro’s usage every week.
We checked every fact below against Anthropic’s own pages on November 2, 2026. We make Context Board, a board that keeps your plan’s limits in view, and it gets one section near the end.
- The rename: Max 20x is now Ultra at $200 a month, and Max 5x is now Max at $100. Prices did not change, and Max 20x subscribers moved over on their own.
- No five-hour limit, once verified: Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically. Until then a temporary five-hour limit applies. No Current session bar in Settings > Usage means you are verified.
- The week still counts: Ultra gives 10 times Pro’s usage every week. Max gives 5 times Pro every five hours and every week.
- Who should pay $200: anyone whose Max week runs out before it resets, or whose long Claude Code runs keep hitting the five-hour stop.
- Watch the week: with no five-hour stop, the week is the limit that stops you.
/usageshows it, and Context Board keeps it on screen with an alert.
What changed on October 30
Anthropic renamed both Max tiers and changed how the top one is limited. Its pricing page and help center, read on November 2, now show four plans for individuals.
| Before October 30 | Now | Price | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | Pro | $20 a month | Nothing |
| Max 5x | Max | $100 a month | The name |
| Max 20x | Ultra | $200 a month | The name, and no five-hour limit for verified accounts |
The Ultra article puts it plainly: “The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change.” If an account isn’t verified yet, a temporary five-hour limit applies, so an Ultra account can still show one for a while.
Old guides and Reddit threads still say Max 5x and Max 20x. When you read one, map Max 5x to Max and Max 20x to Ultra. Our own guides to Claude’s usage limits and Max vs Pro use the new names.
Claude Ultra vs Max vs Pro
Every figure in this table is from Anthropic’s pricing page and the Max and Ultra articles. Prices are US dollars before tax.
| Pro | Max | Ultra | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $20 a month, or $200 a year | $100 a month | $200 a month |
| Five-hour limit | Yes | Yes, 5x Pro | None once verified |
| Weekly limit | Yes, the baseline | 5x Pro | 10x Pro |
| Fable 5 and 5.1 | Usage credits only | Up to 50% of the weekly limit | Up to 50% of the weekly limit |
| Claude Code | Included | Included | Included |
| Monthly API credits | None | $100 | $200 |
| Billing | Monthly or yearly | Monthly only | Monthly only |
Do the sums on the weekly numbers. Call Pro’s week one unit. Pro is $20 for one. Max is $100 for five, which is $20 a unit. Ultra is $200 for ten, also $20 a unit. The price of a week of Claude does not drop as you move up. What Ultra adds for the second $100 is twice Max’s week and no five-hour stop.
The API credits are less useful than they look. Anthropic says the credits that come with Ultra “can’t be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.” They cover the Claude API, the Console and the Agent SDK, so count them only if you build on the API.
How the no five-hour limit works
The five-hour limit was the short clock. On Pro and Max it still is. Each message counts against a rolling five-hour allowance and the weekly allowance at the same time, and you stop when either runs out. On a verified Ultra account the first clock is gone.
- Anthropic verifies the account. “To help prevent fraud and abuse, we automatically verify Ultra accounts using factors like your account and payment history.” You do not apply.
- Until then, a temporary limit applies. It works like Max’s five-hour limit. Anthropic removes it once the account is verified, “so there’s nothing you need to do.”
- Check in Settings > Usage. “If you don’t see a Current session bar, your account is verified.” The weekly bars stay.
A phone number does not speed it up. Anthropic says “verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn’t remove this limit.”
Claude Code follows the same rules. Anthropic’s Claude Code plan article says “Ultra plans have a weekly limit, and verified Ultra accounts don’t have a five-hour session limit.” The limits are shared, so chat on claude.ai and work in Claude Code draw on the same week.
The wrap-up allowance goes away too. On Max, when the five-hour limit lands mid-response, Claude Code can finish the step and show “Usage limit reached · wrapping up”. Anthropic says verified Ultra accounts don’t get it, because there is no five-hour limit to wrap up past.
What no five-hour limit means for your week
On Max, the five-hour limit paces you. It stops a heavy afternoon before it can eat the whole week, and it comes back within hours. Ultra takes that brake off.
Picture a Tuesday on Ultra. You start six Claude Code sessions on a migration, leave them running through the evening, and nothing interrupts you. On Max, the five-hour limit would have paused them twice. On Ultra, they keep drawing on the week until it is gone. Claude Code’s error reference warns that a large workflow fan-out can use up the weekly allowance before a session window resets, and with no session window, nothing stops the fan-out but the week.
When the week runs out, the wait is long. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time Anthropic assigns to your account, not seven days after your first message. Claude Code can wait out a limit and carry on by itself, but it does not start that wait when the reset is more than 24 hours away, which a weekly reset can be.
You have three ways through:
- Wait: Settings > Usage shows your reset day and time.
- Usage credits: turn them on in Settings > Usage, or with
/usage-creditsin Claude Code. Past the weekly limit, requests switch to pay-as-you-go at standard API rates until you hit the monthly spend limit you set, per Anthropic’s usage credits article. Credits can also be pre-bought in bundles, up to 30% off. - Fable’s own cap: Fable can use up to 50% of the week, per the Fable article, and it draws the week down faster than other models. Long Fable runs are the quickest way to empty an Ultra week.
Two habits keep the week intact. Look at /usage before you start a big parallel job, and run routine work on Sonnet. Anthropic’s guide to models and usage in Claude Code says Opus “uses meaningfully more of your quota.”
Is Claude Ultra worth $200?
Ultra costs $100 more than Max. Pick by the limit that stops you, and measure it for a week or two before you pay. Our guide to checking Claude Code usage covers /usage, Settings > Usage and the status line.
| What you see | Pick |
|---|---|
| Limit messages are rare | Pro |
| Pro’s five-hour or weekly limit stops you several times a week | Max |
| Max’s week is still above half on reset day | Stay on Max |
| Max’s week runs out before it resets | Ultra |
| Max’s five-hour stop keeps cutting off long agent runs | Ultra, or let Claude Code wait out the reset |
A few cases the table skips:
- Usage credits on Max pass $100 a month: Max plus credits already costs more than Ultra, which gives you twice the week. Price it.
- Only Fable runs out: Ultra raises Fable’s cap with the week. Moving routine work to Opus 5.5 may be cheaper.
- You run agents overnight: Ultra suits this best, since nothing pauses them at the five-hour mark. Check the week before you leave them.
- You are new to Ultra: watch the weekly bar for the first week. Anthropic gives the multiple as an allowance, not a count of tasks.
Upgrading from Max to Ultra is charged pro rata for the rest of your billing cycle, per the Max article. A downgrade takes effect at the end of the billing period, so a month on Ultra costs a month of Ultra and you can drop back after it.
Keep your Ultra week in sight on a board
On Ultra, nothing taps you on the shoulder until the week is gone. /usage and Settings > Usage only help when you remember to look.
Context Board is ours, so weigh the bias. It is a live board for your work and your agents, and its AI usage widget shows what is left of your Claude Code plan as rings that empty as you use it, green at 50% or more, amber from 20% and red under 20%, each with when it resets. It shows the limits Claude Code reports for your plan. On a verified Ultra account that is the week ring, with Fable’s weekly limit as a line under it. Codex sits in the same widget if you use both.
- Claude Code · docsasks to run the build6m
Under 20% by Friday? Docs work goes on Sonnet.
Set an alert on the widget and the board warns you when less than 10%, 20%, 30% or 50% of the week is left, while the board is open. It is 20% until you pick another. Beside it, Needs you lists every Claude Code session waiting for an answer or an OK, so six parallel sessions do not sit idle while the week ticks on.
A small program on your computer reads the numbers. You set it up once with one line from Connect, and the Agents template has AI usage on it already. Only names, states and percentages leave your computer, never what you and Claude Code wrote. Our Claude Code dashboard guide compares it with Grafana and ccusage. Context Board is free for 3 days, then $12 a month.
Start with /usage today to see where your week stands, then put the ring where you will see it.
