Pay for Claude Code if you want Claude models. Pay for Cursor if you want an editor first. Both put an AI agent on your repo. How Cursor charges for it has changed.
Claude Code comes inside a Claude plan: Pro at $20 a month, Max at $100 or $200. Cursor is now part of SpaceX, and new customers buy it as part of The X Subscription, one subscription for Grok, Cursor and X. Its plans run from free to $200 a month and include Cursor’s own models. Claude, GPT and Gemini are not in the price. From the $30 plan up, you pay API list price for them.
A comparison that shows Cursor Pro at $20 is describing a plan new customers can no longer buy. This guide uses the vendors’ own pages, checked October 26, 2026. It covers what each plan costs, what Claude costs in each tool, how the limits work and which one to pay for.
- Pay for Claude Code to run Claude models. It comes with every paid Claude plan: Pro is $20 a month, Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x is $200. Inside Cursor, Claude is billed at API list price on top of the plan.
- Pay for Cursor for the editor. Paid individual plans run from $8 to $200 a month and include Cursor’s own models, such as Grok 4.7 and Composer 2.5. Cursor recommends Premium ($30) for new AI users and Super ($100) for daily agent users.
- Check the date on any comparison. Cursor Pro at $20 is now a legacy plan that existing subscribers keep. New customers start on Free, Plus, Premium, Super or Ultra.
- You can run both. Claude Code installs inside Cursor, and a Pro or Max plan covers it there.
- On Claude Code? Context Board shows what is left of your five-hour window and your week, and every session waiting on you. Free for 3 days, then $12 a month.

Claude Code vs Cursor pricing
Both tools are sold inside a subscription, so the real question is which subscription you would rather carry. Here are the rungs side by side.
| Per month | Claude plans (Claude Code included) | Cursor plans (The X Subscription) |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | Claude Free, without Claude Code | Free: limited agent and chat usage |
| $8 | Nothing at this price | Plus: Cursor’s own models at fixed settings, no cloud agents, no third-party models |
| $20 to $30 | Pro, $20 ($17 if billed yearly) | Premium, $30 ($25 if billed yearly): 4x Plus usage, cloud agents, Bugbot code reviews, third-party models at API list price |
| $100 | Max 5x: five times Pro’s usage per session | Super: 15x Plus usage, priority model access at peak times |
| $200 | Max 20x: twenty times Pro’s usage per session | Ultra: 50x Plus usage, earliest access to new products and models |
The multipliers do not compare across vendors. Max 5x is five times Pro. Super is fifteen times Plus. Each is measured against its own base plan, so you cannot read one against the other.
Claude Code is in all paid Claude plans, per Claude’s pricing page. Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly. Max 5x is $100 and Max 20x is $200, per Anthropic’s Max plan article. Team plans include it too. A Standard seat is $20 billed annually or $25 monthly, and a Premium seat is $100 billed annually or $125 monthly. You can also run Claude Code on a Claude Console account and pay per token.
Cursor sells five individual tiers: Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra. Annual billing is $80, $300, $1,000 and $2,000 a year for the four paid ones, per Cursor’s models and pricing docs. Team seats are $30, $100 or $200, matching Premium, Super and Ultra. Every paid tier gets one weekly pool of usage for Cursor’s own models.
Cursor’s pricing page says who each tier is for: Premium for new AI users, Super for daily agent users, Ultra for power users, and Plus for social creators with limited AI usage. The same page also lists Grok apps and X benefits, such as a Premium checkmark and ad-free scrolling on X. Ignore those rows if you only want the coding agent.
Legacy Cursor plans: Pro, Pro+ and Ultra keep working for the people who already have them. Per Cursor’s legacy plans page, they have a monthly pool for Cursor’s models and a second one for third-party models. Cursor maps Pro ($20) to Premium ($30) and Pro+ ($60) to Super ($100). It says each new plan includes at least twice the coding usage with Cursor models, and that it drops the included third-party allowance. Switching is optional and permanent, so compare before you click.
Models: what each plan includes
Claude Code runs Claude models. On Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise the default is Opus 5.5, per its model docs. Switch to Sonnet 5.5 for everyday coding, Haiku 5.5 for small jobs or Fable 5.1 for the hardest, longest tasks. Fable is billed apart: Pro runs it on usage credits, and Max has a separate weekly limit for it.
Cursor puts its own models in the plan: Grok 4.7, Grok 4.6, Grok 4.5 and Composer 2.5. They draw on the weekly pool at different rates. Plus runs them at fixed settings, with Fast off and medium effort. Claude, GPT and Gemini are not in the pool. From Premium up, you can pick them at API list price: the per-token rate each maker charges developers. You pay it from prepaid credit, from the first request.
Prepaid credit is money you load ahead of time. You can top it up by hand or turn on Auto Top-up, and a monthly limit caps what you spend on extras.
The list prices match Anthropic’s. Cursor’s docs show Opus 5.5 at $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output, Sonnet 5.5 at $2 and $10, and Fable 5.1 at $10 and $50. Claude’s API pricing shows the same numbers.
That makes Claude in Cursor a metered cost. Anthropic’s cost docs put the average across enterprise deployments at about $13 per developer per active day, or $150 to $250 a month, at API token prices. Your number will differ with the model, the size of your repo and your habits, and Cursor runs a different agent, so treat it as a rough anchor. Next to it, a flat $100 or $200 Max plan is a bill you can plan around.
This guide does not rank the models. Vendors publish their own benchmarks, and your repo is the test that counts. Cursor Free includes the agent with limited usage, so you can try Cursor’s own models before you pay.
Usage limits
Claude Code on Pro and Max has a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit. Both are shared with Claude chat, per Anthropic’s article on Claude Code with Pro or Max, so a long afternoon of chat leaves less for coding. Max adds a separate weekly limit for Fable. When you hit a limit you can wait for the reset, move up a plan, or turn on usage credits and keep going at standard API rates. Type /usage in Claude Code or open claude.ai/settings/usage. Our guide to checking Claude Code usage covers every way in.
Cursor has one weekly pool for its own models. It is shared across the editor agent, the CLI, cloud agents, Grok Bot and the Grok apps, and unused usage does not roll over. When the pool runs out you can wait for the reset, pay from prepaid credit at the same per-model rates, or upgrade. Cursor says requests are never downgraded in quality or speed. Cursor’s usage article has the detail, and your remaining usage shows under Usage at grok.com/dashboard and in editor settings.
The units differ. Claude Code’s limits are clocks: five hours and a week. Cursor’s pool is a weekly clock too, but Claude inside Cursor runs on a balance, and a balance stops where you set the cap.
Where each one runs
Claude Code runs in a terminal, a VS Code extension, a JetBrains plugin, the Claude desktop app, a browser at claude.ai/code, the Claude mobile app and Slack, per the Claude Code docs. Your CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers work on all of them. Remote Control lets a browser or phone steer a session that runs on your computer, and cloud scheduled tasks keep running when your computer is off.
Cursor is an app you install on macOS, Windows or Linux. Open it in the Agents window, which is built for running agents in parallel, or in the classic editor, which runs VS Code extensions. The CLI installs with one curl line and starts with agent. Cloud agents run on Cursor’s virtual machines and do not need your computer to stay online. You can start them from the web, the iOS app, Slack, GitHub, Linear or the API, per the cloud agents docs. They need Premium or above, or a legacy paid plan. The iOS app can also see and reply to the local agents on your computer while it stays on, per Cursor’s changelog.
How the agents work
Both are agents, not autocomplete. You describe a task, and they read files, edit them, run commands and check the result. Several habits match.
- Plan first: Shift+Tab cycles to plan mode in both. Cursor’s Plan Mode asks clarifying questions, researches the codebase and drafts a plan you can edit. Claude Code’s plan mode researches and proposes without editing your source until you approve.
- Undo: Cursor saves checkpoints before significant changes, stored locally and apart from Git. Claude Code snapshots before each prompt, and
/rewindrestores an earlier state. - Parallel work: Cursor’s Agents window can give each task its own Git worktree. Claude Code has subagents, each with its own context window. Its agent teams exist but are experimental and off by default.
- Autocomplete: Cursor adds Tab, which suggests code as you type. Claude Code works by task, not by keystroke.
- Review: on Premium and above, Cursor’s Bugbot reviews your pull requests.
MCP, rules and extensions
MCP: both connect to MCP servers, so the same server works in either. In Claude Code you add a remote server with claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp, per its MCP docs. HTTP is the recommended transport, and OAuth sign-in works. Cursor takes stdio, SSE and Streamable HTTP servers, signs in to remote ones with OAuth, and reads them from .cursor/mcp.json in a project or ~/.cursor/mcp.json for every project, per its MCP docs. It also has a Marketplace for one-click installs, and its cloud agents can use MCP servers too.
Instructions: Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, and its docs say it can read a repo’s AGENTS.md in place of one. Cursor reads AGENTS.md in the project root and in subfolders, and has its own rules in .cursor/rules.
Skills, subagents and hooks: both have all three. Cursor also loads skills from .claude/skills/ and subagents from .claude/agents/, and it can load hooks from Claude Code, so a setup built for one carries over.
MCP is also how you add data to either one. Our post on SEO inside Cursor shows one server working in Cursor’s chat.
Which one should you pay for?
Claude Code or Cursor? Pick the model first, then the tool.
- You want Claude models and a bill you can plan: Claude Code. Start on Pro at $20 and move to Max 5x at $100 when the limits bite.
- You want an editor with autocomplete and a model picker: Cursor. Start at Premium ($30), which is what Cursor recommends for new AI users.
- You want to try before you pay: Cursor Free includes the agent with limited usage. Claude Free does not include Claude Code.
- You code all day on Claude: Max 5x or Max 20x. Cursor’s plans at the same prices, Super and Ultra, include Cursor’s models, not Claude.
- You want GPT or Gemini too: Cursor, from Premium, at API list price. Claude Code runs Claude models.
- You already pay for Cursor Pro or Pro+: keep it until you have compared. It continues unchanged, and its second pool still covers third-party models.
If you can pay for one and Claude is the model you want, pay for Claude. If the editor is the point, pay for Cursor and treat its own models as the default. If Codex is on your list too, Claude Code vs Codex compares those two.
Using Claude Code and Cursor together
You can run Claude Code inside Cursor. Anthropic’s VS Code page has an Install for Cursor link, and its support article says a Pro or Max plan covers Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor and other VS Code forks. That usage counts toward the same limits as your Claude chat.
So there are two ways to run Claude inside Cursor, and they bill differently. On Cursor’s current plans, its own agent with a Claude model is metered at API list price from prepaid credit. The Claude Code extension runs on your Claude plan.
One split to try: Cursor for the editor and quick edits on its own models, Claude Code for the long tasks on Opus 5.5. Both read AGENTS.md, both take the same MCP servers, and Cursor loads your .claude skills, so much of the setup carries over. At list prices, Claude Pro plus Cursor Premium is $50 a month.
What breaks is the bookkeeping. There is a Claude window and week to watch, a Cursor weekly pool to watch, and sessions running in more than one place.
Use either one with Context Board
Context Board is ours, so weigh the bias. It is a live board you build for yourself, and it works with either tool.
Cursor and Claude Code both connect to it over MCP. You add the board by its address, sign in on an Allow page, and your agent can read the board, send it data, add widgets, tasks and notes, post updates and say what it is working on.
Choose Claude Code and the board does more. A small program on your computer, set up once with one line from Connect, feeds the AI usage widget with what is left of your five-hour window and your week, as Claude Code last checked. The widget draws them as rings with reset times. Add it from the gallery, or start from the Agents template, which has it already. The same program feeds Needs you and Agent activity with every Claude Code session on your computer, and whether it is working, done or waiting for you. Only names, states and percentages leave your computer, never what was said in a session. These widgets read Claude Code and Codex.
Context Board is free for 3 days, then $12 a month.
