The State of AI Search · 2026
Search is being answered,
not clicked.
Billions of searches a month now end inside an AI answer instead of on a website. Here is what the data actually says about AI Overviews, ChatGPT, zero-click search, and how a page gets cited in 2026. Every figure links to its primary source.
01 · The shift
People are moving from searching to asking.
The behavior change is not subtle and it is not a forecast anymore. Hundreds of millions of people now open an AI assistant first, and the largest search engine on earth answers most queries on the results page itself.
Weekly ChatGPT users as of February 2026, up from 400M a year earlier and 800M in December 2025.
OpenAI via TechCrunch, Feb 2026Monthly users of Google AI Overviews by mid-2025, up from 1.5B in May 2025. Google AI Mode passed 100M users in the US and India.
Google via TechCrunch, Jul 2025Gartner's prediction for the drop in traditional search engine volume by 2026, as users shift to AI chatbots and virtual agents.
"Generative AI solutions are becoming substitute answer engines." Alan Antin, VP Analyst, Gartner.
Gartner, Feb 2024Share of consumers who now start their searches with an AI tool rather than Google, per a 2025 study reported by Search Engine Land. Search engines still hold the large majority of total query volume.
Search Engine Land, 2025In a Bain & Company survey, 56% of people said they mostly or always default to a search engine, while 16% default to a chatbot. Among millennials and Gen Z, search-engine default drops to 42%.
Bain & Company, 202502 · The click collapse
When the answer is right there, nobody clicks.
The link economy that powered the open web for two decades is contracting. The clearest signal is the zero-click search: a query that gets resolved on the results page without a single visit to a website.
US zero-click searches, by year

SparkToro, Jun 202603 · AI Overviews
AI Overviews went from novelty to fixture.
Semrush tracked AI Overview presence across more than 10 million keywords through 2025. The rollout was fast, then settled, and the mix of queries it touches keeps widening.
Share of queries showing an AI Overview, 2025
Semrush AI Overviews Study, Dec 2025Of AI Overview queries in November 2025 were in Science, the most saturated category, followed by Computers & Electronics at 18%.
Semrush, Dec 2025AI Overviews started as an informational feature (91% of triggering queries in Jan 2025) and pushed into commercial and transactional intent through the year (57% informational by Oct 2025).
Semrush, Dec 2025Reading the data honestly
Prevalence estimates vary by methodology. Semrush's longitudinal study settled near 16% of queries by late 2025, while snapshot trackers using different keyword sets report figures up to 48%. We cite the large longitudinal dataset and flag the range. One more nuance worth keeping: on the exact same keywords, Semrush found the zero-click rate dipped slightly after AI Overviews appeared (33.75% to 31.53%), so the broader click decline is bigger than any single feature.
Semrush, Dec 202504 · The citation gap
Ranking #1 is no longer the same as being the answer.
The link between a top organic ranking and a citation in an AI answer is weakening fast. Two large studies disagree on the exact number but point the same way: more and more of what AI cites does not come from page one.
AI Overview citations that came from a top-10 page
Ahrefs, 2026AI Overview citations that pull from content outside the organic top 10, by BrightEdge's count (only ~17% come from the top 10). Different method, same direction as Ahrefs.
BrightEdge, 2026In high-trust categories like healthcare, insurance, and education, citation and top-10 overlap stays high. Where trust matters most, AI still leans on what already ranks.
Ahrefs, 202605 · What earns a citation
The pages AI quotes are specific, sourced, and structured.
This is the discipline now called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), or Answer Engine Optimization. The first peer-reviewed study on it, from a Princeton-led team and published at KDD 2024, tested optimization tactics across a large benchmark of queries.
more visibility in generative engine responses from GEO tactics, in controlled testing.
The methods that moved the needle most were not keyword tricks. They were adding relevant statistics, quotations from credible voices, and clear citations to sources, plus writing with authoritative, fluent language. In plain terms: the way to be quoted by an AI engine is to be the most concrete, verifiable, well-attributed source on the topic.
Aggarwal et al., GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, KDD 2024A page like this one is built on exactly those levers. That is not a coincidence. The same structure that earns a journalist's citation, real numbers with named sources, is what earns a citation from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI answers.
06 · The upside
The traffic that does come through converts better.
AI search is not only a threat to clicks. It is becoming a real acquisition channel, and the visitors it sends tend to arrive with higher intent. Adobe tracked this across US retail through 2025.
Growth in traffic to US retail sites from generative AI sources, year over year, as of early 2025. By the 2025 holiday season the jump was +693% year over year.
Adobe Analytics, Mar 2025Visitors arriving from a generative AI assistant were 33% less likely to bounce immediately than other traffic during the 2025 holiday season.
Adobe Analytics, 2025Year-to-date lift in revenue per visit from AI-referred traffic over the 2025 holiday period. More traffic, and higher-value traffic.
Adobe Analytics, 2025What it all means
Four things the 2026 data makes clear.
- 01
The click is no longer the unit of search.
With 68% of US searches ending without a click and AI summaries cutting clicks roughly in half, visibility now means being inside the answer, not just near it.
- 02
Rankings and citations are diverging.
The top-10 share of AI citations fell from 76% to 38% in under a year. Winning the AI answer is becoming its own discipline, separate from classic SEO.
- 03
Concrete, sourced content wins the quote.
The peer-reviewed evidence is blunt: statistics, citations, and quotable specifics drive up to 40% more visibility in AI answers. Vague content does not get cited.
- 04
AI search is a channel, not just a loss.
AI referrals are growing in the high hundreds of percent year over year and convert better than average. The opportunity is to be measurable in it early.

FAQ
Common questions about AI search in 2026.
What percentage of Google searches show an AI Overview?
It depends on the study and the keyword mix. Semrush, tracking more than 10 million keywords, found AI Overviews on 6.49% of queries in January 2025, peaking at 24.61% in July and settling near 15.69% by November 2025. Snapshot trackers that use different keyword samples report figures up to around 48%.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
Yes. Pew Research found people clicked a traditional search result on 8% of pages with an AI summary, versus 15% without, and clicked a source link inside the AI summary just 1% of the time. SparkToro estimates AI Overviews cut click-through rate by roughly 60% when present.
What share of searches end without a click?
In the US, 68.01% of Google searches ended without any click in the first four months of 2026, per SparkToro analysis of Similarweb clickstream data. That is up from 60.45% in 2024 and about 45% a decade earlier.
How many people use ChatGPT and AI search?
OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active ChatGPT users in February 2026, more than double the figure a year earlier. Google AI Overviews reached around 2 billion monthly users in 2025, and Google AI Mode passed 100 million users.
Does ranking number one on Google get you cited by AI?
Less and less. Ahrefs found the share of Google AI Overview citations coming from top-10 organic pages fell from 76% in mid-2025 to 38% by early 2026. Earning a citation in an AI answer is becoming a separate discipline from classic ranking.
What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the practice of making content more likely to be quoted by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. A peer-reviewed Princeton-led study (KDD 2024) found that adding statistics, citations, and quotations can boost a page visibility in AI responses by up to 40%.
