It connects in 5 minutes.

  1. Use the right ContextBolt account Sign into the extension with your account email and email code. If Pro is not active yet, save your license key once in Settings under Account. Let cloud sync finish. Use this same email when connecting your AI app.
  2. Open custom app setup Use ChatGPT's custom MCP app or connector setup, with Developer mode if required. Availability and tool permissions depend on your plan and workspace settings. This is a custom connection, separate from any directory listing.
  3. Choose OAuth and connect Use https://api.contextbolt.app/mcp and select OAuth, not None. Sign in on the ContextBolt page with your Pro extension account email, enter the email code, and approve the connection.
  4. Check the connection Start a fresh chat or session and ask what bookmark tools are available. If the library looks empty, check that the extension and the AI connection use the same email, Pro is active, and cloud sync has finished.

ChatGPT supports custom MCP connectors, which means you can point it at your ContextBolt library and search everything you have saved, web pages included, on X, Reddit, and LinkedIn from inside a conversation.

This is the setup where the difference shows up fastest, because chat is where you ask open questions. “What have I saved about this, and what are the common threads?” is a genuinely different question from a search box, and it is the one ChatGPT is good at.

Developer mode is the gate

Custom MCP app availability and tool permissions depend on your current ChatGPT plan and workspace settings. Use Developer mode if required by your account, or ask your workspace admin to enable custom apps. Do not assume directory access means custom apps are enabled.

Open your ChatGPT settings and find custom apps or connectors. Turn on Developer mode if required and available; workspace administrators may control access.

Adding the connector

In Settings, Connectors, click Create:

  • Name: Bookmarks
  • URL: https://api.contextbolt.app/mcp
  • Authentication: OAuth

Complete the ContextBolt sign-in with the same email as your Pro extension account, enter the code we send you, and approve the connection. Do not select None for this shared URL.

This shared URL contains no personal credential. Your older personal token URL is different and must stay private if you use it as a compatibility option.

If it saves but finds nothing

MCP reads from your synced library. Check that ChatGPT and the extension use the same account email, your account has Pro, and automatic cloud sync has finished.

Confirm the Pro badge is green in the extension, give the first sync a minute, and try again. It is worth checking this before you delete and rebuild the connector, because the symptoms point at the wrong thing.

What chat is actually good for

Synthesis across saves: “Summarize what I’ve saved about retention” reads across dozens of posts and gives you the themes. A search box cannot do that.

Grounded drafting: “Using my saved posts on cold email, draft a sequence” produces something shaped by material you already vetted rather than generic advice.

Finding the thing you half-remember: semantic search means you can describe the idea badly and still land on it.

Seeing what you actually collect: ask for your clusters and you get an honest picture of where your attention has been going.

This is separate from ChatGPT’s built-in memory, which only knows what you have told it in conversation. The two work together without conflict. Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan?

What authentication should I choose?

Choose OAuth for https://api.contextbolt.app/mcp. Sign in with your Pro extension account email, enter the email code, and approve access. Authentication None applies only to the older private personal-URL option, not this shared URL.

The connector saves but returns nothing. What's wrong?

Check that the extension and ChatGPT use the same account email, Pro is active, and cloud sync has finished. Also check that the connection is enabled for this chat. Reconnect if OAuth sign-in did not finish.

Can ChatGPT delete my bookmarks?

No. It can search and retrieve, and it can create new bookmarks with save_bookmark. It cannot modify or delete anything already saved, so there is no risk to your library from a chat going off-script.

Is this different from ChatGPT's built-in memory?

Completely. Built-in memory remembers things you have told ChatGPT in conversations. This connects it to content you deliberately saved from across the web, which is a much larger and better-curated body of material. The two work fine together.
