Meta Ads MCP: Meta's Own Server, and When to Pay for More

Meta Ads is where Facebook and Instagram ads are bought, run and measured. Since April 29, 2026, Meta has hosted its own server that lets an AI assistant work inside your ad account. MCP is the open standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude or ChatGPT call another product’s tools directly.

Ask Claude for last week’s spend and it calls a Meta tool named ads_get_ad_entities. Approve a different one, ads_activate_entity, and in Meta’s own words it “starts spending budget.” Both come through the same sign-in.

Many of the pages ranking for this term come from companies that sell their own way to connect AI to Meta ads. We don’t sell one, so here is the plain version.

If Meta is your only ad platform, start with Meta’s server before you pay anyone. Pay a third party for breadth, like Google and TikTok in one answer, not for access.

Quick answer
  • Meta runs an official server. It lives at https://mcp.facebook.com/ads, has been in open beta since April 29, 2026, and signs you in with Facebook. In Claude, you don’t need a developer app.
  • Paused covers new ads only. Meta’s create tools make campaigns, ad sets and ads paused, and nothing in its docs limits ads_update_entity to paused ones.
  • Pay for breadth, not access. Pipeboard covers Meta, Google, TikTok and more, free for 30 tool calls a week, then US$29.90 a month for Pro. Adspirer covers six, free for 15 tasks a month.
  • Building your own starts slow on purpose. A new Meta app sits on a development tier that blocks an ad account for 300 seconds once it scores 60 points, and each write costs 3.
  • Your winning ad hook may deserve a page. ContextBolt SEO shows whether people also search for it, with volume, difficulty and cost per click, so the angle can keep earning after the budget stops.

Meta’s own server, in plain terms

Meta calls it the ads MCP server, one of its “ads AI connectors.” It launched in open beta on April 29, 2026, alongside an Ads CLI for developers. Meta’s announcement says the MCP route needs no developer credentials, API setup or coding.

Here’s what Meta’s developer docs said when we read them on October 15, 2026.

  • Address: https://mcp.facebook.com/ads, hosted by Meta.
  • Sign-in: Facebook Login for Business, with your Facebook account or a Meta Managed Account. No Meta developer app needed.
  • Clients: Any MCP-compatible agent, with written steps for Claude Code and ChatGPT.
  • Tools: 91 in seven groups, covering reporting, ads, catalogs, pixels and datasets, help articles, A/B tests and lift studies, and the activity log.
  • Price: None listed. Neither the announcement nor the docs mention one.

The tool count trips people up. In his May 5 walkthrough, Jon Loomer saw 29 tools, and several guides still quote that number. Meta’s docs list 91 today.

Ask your agent which tools it can see before you build a habit around one.

On July 16, Meta added two things. Developers can now connect any AI app through their own Meta app. And new “ads MCP server rules” let anyone with full control of a business portfolio govern what agents can do, “from budget changes to catalog updates.”

Meta’s MCP docs have no page on the rules yet, so check what yours are set to instead of assuming a default.

Even a rival concedes the basics. Pipeboard’s own README calls Meta’s connector “the safest single-platform option.” If MCP is new to you, our plain guide to MCP explains it without the acronyms.

Set it up in Claude or ChatGPT

In Claude

Claude’s connector directory had no Meta entry when we searched it on October 15, 2026. So Meta’s server goes in as a custom connector. Anthropic’s help center says those work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans, and Free accounts get one.

  1. Go to Customize, then Connectors, then +, then Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Meta Ads and paste https://mcp.facebook.com/ads. Review the sign-in settings Claude detects, then click Add.
  3. Click Connect and sign in with Facebook. In Loomer’s walkthrough, Meta then asks which business portfolios to share. Share only the one you need.
  4. In a new chat, open +, then Connectors, and switch Meta Ads on.

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds the connector first, then each person connects their own account. If it connects but returns no data, suspect access before you blame Claude. Loomer noted that “not all advertisers currently have access” during the open beta.

In ChatGPT

It works only where your plan or workspace allows custom MCP servers. OpenAI’s docs say to open Plugins, select +, then Add custom MCP server, enter the URL, set up sign-in and accept the risk warning.

Meta’s own ChatGPT steps assume you have a Meta developer app and enter its app ID as the OAuth client ID. Our list of AI tools that support MCP covers which apps take custom servers and on which plans.

In Claude Code

Meta’s docs give a claude mcp add command for people with their own Meta app. The other route for coding agents is the Ads CLI, which needs Python 3.12 or later and a system user token. Meta says those tokens don’t expire, so guard yours like a password.

What it can change, and what “paused” misses

Meta’s tool list puts its safety promise in one sentence. “Write tools create entities in a paused state; your AI client asks for confirmation before activation.”

That covers new things. Read the rest of the list and four gaps show up.

  • Live edits: ads_update_entity changes fields on campaigns, ad sets and ads that already exist. Nothing in the docs limits it to paused ones.
  • Spend: ads_activate_entity switches a paused item to active, which Meta says “starts spending budget.”
  • Deletes: Custom audiences, catalog products, product feeds and pixel event rules each have a delete tool.
  • The sign-in: We called the server without signing in on October 15, 2026, and it asked for nine permissions. One was ads_management, the write permission.

So the connection isn’t read-only. Your habits have to be. You have three brakes.

  1. Meta’s rules: If you have full control of the business portfolio, use them to restrict budget changes before anyone connects an agent.
  2. Claude’s approvals: Anthropic says to click “Allow always” only for a server and tool you trust to run unsupervised. Meta’s write tools don’t qualify.
  3. Research mode: Anthropic says Claude can call connector tools “automatically without further approval” while it researches, and tells you to disable write tools first. Do that before you ask Claude to dig through your account.

When a third-party server is worth paying for

Meta’s server covers Meta. That gap is the honest reason to pay someone else.

So ask one question first. Do you need Google or TikTok in the same answer?

Prices below were read from each vendor’s own page on October 15, 2026.

Pipeboard: Its meta-ads-mcp repo had 1,305 GitHub stars on October 15, 2026, and the hosted version is one URL you add like Meta’s, https://meta-ads.mcp.pipeboard.co/. Its pricing page counts every tool call against the free 30, reads included, so that allowance goes fast.

The code is source-available. The Business Source License 1.1 lets you run it but not resell it as a competing hosted service, and it turns Apache 2.0 on January 1, 2029.

Adspirer: It prices by task, and its pricing page counts a performance pull as one. Plus is $49 a month, or $40 a month billed annually, for 150 tasks.

AdsAgent: Its free tier is read-only by design, with “No writes” printed on the plan. That’s a hosted way to keep your first month read-only without relying on willpower.

Windsor.ai: It’s listed in Claude’s connector directory, and its own comparison page says it now writes back to Meta, budgets included. Treat it like any other server that can spend.

Bundled with an ad tool: Madgicx includes its MCP in plans “starting at $45/mo.” Ryze AI includes one in its $89-a-month Paid Ads plan, and Markifact lists MCP on its plans from $79 a month.

Lead forms only: Zapier’s Facebook Lead Ads MCP, which ranks for this term, has one action. It sends lead events to Meta’s Conversions API.

For developers: Composio and Scalekit wrap the Marketing API for teams building their own agents. Composio says Meta connections go through your own OAuth app, so the rules below apply.

If you also run search ads, our Google Ads MCP guide covers that side.

If you build your own on the Marketing API

Self-hosted servers like GoMarble’s, and developer platforms like Composio, sit on Meta’s Marketing API. They inherit its rules. Here’s what Meta’s authorization docs say.

  • Your own ad account: Standard access to ads_read and ads_management is enough, and business apps get it automatically.
  • Clients’ accounts: You need advanced access through App Review, and advanced access needs Business Verification.
  • The starting tier: Separately from those permissions, new apps start on the Marketing API’s Limited access tier, which Meta calls “heavily rate-limited” and “for development only.”
  • The way out: 500 Marketing API calls in 15 days, with an error rate under 15 percent, then an upgrade through App Review.

The rate limits are where an agent hits a wall. On Limited access an ad account can score 60 points, where a read costs 1 and a write costs 3. So 20 quick writes reach the ceiling, and Meta blocks you for 300 seconds.

Full access raises the ceiling to 9,000 and cuts the block to 60 seconds.

Budgets have their own rule. An ad set’s budget can change 4 times an hour, and the fifth try fails with error 613, “You can only change your ad set budget 4 times per hour.”

Tokens expire too. Meta says a short-lived user token lasts an hour or two, and a long-lived one around 60 days. GoMarble’s README tells you to generate a new token and edit your config by hand when it runs out.

One line in Meta’s docs deserves a sticky note. “Calls on ANY access level are against production data.” The development tier is not a test mode.

What actually goes wrong

The ban you’ve heard about

Digiday reported on April 29, 2026 that some ad execs said their accounts were restricted or banned after integrating Claude Code. It added that “no official link between the two has been confirmed.”

AdAdvisor, which offers its own Meta Ads MCP, ranks for this term with “The Dangers of MCP for Meta Ads.” It says “advertisers are being banned right now for using unapproved MCP servers.” It names no case.

What Meta does document is throttling. Its docs say burst traffic usually triggers the ad account limits, errors 17 and 613, and an agent retrying writes in a loop is burst traffic. So pace it.

Numbers that don’t match Ads Manager

An open issue on Pipeboard’s server, filed March 7, 2026, describes Ads Manager showing 3 active campaigns while the tool’s ACTIVE filter returned 25 or more. Campaigns that had reached their end date still read as ACTIVE.

Ask for each campaign’s effective status and end date. Then check the count against Ads Manager before you trust a summary.

Self-hosted servers and leaked tokens

Pipeboard published 12 security advisories between May 20 and September 23, 2026, two rated critical at CVSS 9.1. The worst let anyone who could reach a self-hosted server’s HTTP port run its tools as the owner and see the owner’s Meta token. Pipeboard says its hosted service wasn’t affected, and it disclosed each fix in public.

If you ran the package on your own machine before version 1.0.128, delete meta_ads_debug.log. Pipeboard says those files hold access tokens in full. If those logs ever left your machine, rotate the token too.

Four prompts to run first

Run the three read-only ones for your first month. They only read, and together they show whether the connection earns a place in your week.

Spend and ROAS

Use Meta Ads, read only. Do not change anything.
For the last 7 days, list each campaign with spend,
purchases, ROAS and cost per purchase. Put the 7 days
before that next to each one. Sort by spend, and flag
any campaign where ROAS fell by more than 20 percent.

Creative fatigue

Read only. Find the ads that spent money in each of
the last 4 weeks. Show weekly CTR, CPM and cost per
result for each, plus frequency if you can get it.
List the ads where CTR fell two weeks running while
CPM rose, and quote each ad's headline so I can find
it in Ads Manager.

What changed this week

Read only. Pull this ad account's activity log for the
last 7 days. List each change with the date, who made
it, the campaign or ad set, and the old and new value.
Then show any performance anomalies Meta flags for the
same week, and match them to the changes if you can.

Plan, approve, apply

Plan only. Do not change anything yet. Suggest up to
3 budget changes for this week, each no more than 20
percent, with the numbers behind each one. Show the
ad set, its current budget and the new budget. Wait
until I reply "approved" with the ones I want. Then
apply only those, one ad set at a time, and do not
activate anything that is paused.

The 20 percent cap is a suggestion, not a Meta rule. Small, named changes are easy to check in Ads Manager afterward and easy to reverse.

Where ContextBolt fits

ContextBolt is ours, so weigh the bias. Your ads tell you which angle people click, but not whether anyone searches for it.

ContextBolt SEO is a hosted SEO MCP server that covers that half. It shows keyword volume, difficulty and cost per click, who ranks for a term, and your own Search Console clicks and positions once you connect it. It works in Claude, Cursor and Codex, and in ChatGPT only where the account allows a custom MCP connector.

Put it in the same Claude chat as Meta’s server, and the hook that wins this month can become a page that keeps earning after the ad budget stops. The agent is where you ask, and every lookup saves automatically to your SEO Dashboard. Our guide to keyword research with Claude walks through the rest.

Try both together

Read only. From Meta Ads, find the 3 ads with the best
CTR in the last 30 days and quote each headline. Then
use ContextBolt SEO to check search volume, difficulty
and cost per click for the main phrase in each. Tell me
which angle deserves a page, and who ranks for it now.

The 7-day free trial includes 100 credits and requires a card. After that it is $35 a month with 1,000 credits. Keyword, difficulty and search-result checks cost 1 credit each, and the numbers are estimates from a large keyword index, directionally right and good enough to decide with.

Frequently asked questions

Something else on your mind? Get in touch.

Does Meta have an official MCP server for ads?

Yes. Meta launched its ads MCP server in open beta on April 29, 2026, at mcp.facebook.com/ads. You sign in with Facebook, and in Claude no developer app is needed. Meta's docs list 91 tools across reporting, ads, catalogs, pixels, help, tests and activity logs. New campaigns, ad sets and ads are created paused.

How do I connect Meta Ads to Claude?

In Claude, go to Customize, then Connectors, then +, then Add custom connector. Paste https://mcp.facebook.com/ads, click Add, then Connect, and sign in with Facebook. Meta's server isn't in Claude's connector directory, so it goes in as a custom connector. Free plans allow one custom connector.

Can I use Meta Ads MCP in ChatGPT?

Only where your plan or workspace allows custom MCP servers. In ChatGPT you add one from Plugins, then +, then Add custom MCP server. Meta's own ChatGPT steps assume you have a Meta developer app and enter its app ID as the OAuth client ID. In a managed workspace, check with your admin first.

Is Pipeboard's meta-ads-mcp open source?

Not in the strict sense. The code is on GitHub under the Business Source License 1.1, which allows production use but bars offering it as a competing hosted service. It converts to Apache 2.0 on January 1, 2029. The hosted version is free for 30 tool calls a week, and Pro costs US$29.90 a month.

Can a Meta Ads MCP get my ad account banned?

Some advertisers say so, but Digiday reported in April 2026 that no official link had been confirmed. What Meta does document is throttling. Its Marketing API docs say bursts of calls usually trigger the limits, and an ad set's budget can change four times an hour. Pace the writes and approve each one.
