ContextBolt SEO vs Semrush

By David

Verdict

The $139 marketing suite, against a $35 server that does the research half of it inside your agent.

ContextBolt SEO $35/mo
Semrush From $139/mo

Who wins each feature, of 13 compared

Semrush is the broadest marketing suite there is: rank tracking, a site crawler, PPC and competitor intel, and AI-search prompt tracking, from $139 a month. ContextBolt SEO is $35 a month for the research half of that, inside the agent you already work in, with no dashboard, no seats and every finding saved to your project.

One subscription. Keywords, backlinks and AI visibility in the same chat.

Semrush is the biggest marketing suite in the category, and that is the whole point of it. SEO sits alongside PPC research, competitor traffic intel, social, content tooling and, since the AI-search plans, prompt tracking.

ContextBolt SEO is the standalone hosted server I built. It does the research half of that suite, inside your agent, for $35 a month.

Full disclosure since you are reading this on the ContextBolt site. I make one of these two products. Here is the honest comparison anyway, including where Semrush wins outright, because it wins a lot.

Quick answer
  • Semrush starts at $139 a month for the SEO plan ($117.33 billed annually), covering 5 sites and 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter, at $199, adds AI-search prompt tracking. Pro+ is $299 and Advanced is $549.
  • ContextBolt SEO is $35 a month flat for 1,000 lookups. Keyword, SERP, domain, competitor and backlink research, page and site audits, AI visibility, and a free Search Console connection, all inside Claude, Cursor, Codex or Windsurf.
  • Breadth vs price. Semrush does far more. ContextBolt SEO does the research part at roughly a quarter of the entry price.
  • Setup. Semrush is an account, a plan and a configured project. ContextBolt SEO is one MCP URL pasted once.

What Semrush is

Semrush is a marketing platform rather than an SEO tool. Keyword Magic for research, Position Tracking for daily rankings, Site Audit for crawling, Backlink Analytics and a link building tool, plus advertising research, social scheduling and content tooling around the edges.

The plan lineup changed with the AI-search push. The entry SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually, and gives you 5 websites and 500 keywords tracked daily. Starter, at $199, adds 50 prompts tracked daily across AI answers. Pro+ is $299 for 15 websites and 1,500 keywords, and Advanced is $549. There is a free plan with one demo project and 10 reports a day, which is a genuine way to try it.

Semrush also ships an official MCP server on the paid plans, with a native ChatGPT connector. It is a query layer on the platform, not a cheaper entry point, and the head-to-head on that covers it properly.

What ContextBolt SEO does differently

ContextBolt SEO is a hosted standalone MCP server. You subscribe, you get one URL, and you paste it into Claude, Cursor, Codex or Windsurf. There is no dashboard and nothing to install.

The toolkit covers the surface most people open a suite for. Keyword research and difficulty, SERP overviews, domain and competitor analysis, three backlink tools, page and site audits, and three AI-visibility tools that report whether ChatGPT and Gemini name your brand. Your own Google Search Console connects free and spends no credits.

The data sits on DataForSEO, the wholesale layer behind a long list of SEO products. The estimates are directional and useful for decisions. They are not Semrush first-party numbers, and Semrush’s keyword database is larger.

Two things it does that Semrush does not. Cross-session memory: ask about the same keyword next week and the answer leads with what has changed, with no extra prompt. Findings saved to your project: every lookup writes a markdown file into a ./seo-findings/ folder, so the research lives where you work and survives a cancelled subscription.

The AI-search wrinkle

This is the one place the pricing gets interesting rather than just cheaper.

Semrush put AI-search prompt tracking behind Starter, at $199 a month, and what you get is 50 prompts tracked daily. That is scheduled, continuous monitoring and it is genuinely more than an on-demand check.

ContextBolt SEO includes AI visibility at $35, but on demand: you ask, it answers, and nothing runs while you sleep. If continuous prompt tracking is the job, Semrush does it and this does not. If you want to check where you stand every few weeks alongside your keyword work, the gap is a lot smaller than the price difference suggests.

The honest gap

Rank tracking and the scheduled crawler are the two things people miss most, and there is no version of this that has them. Neither is a roadmap promise here; they are simply not what the product is.

The rest comes down to the question every suite decision comes down to. How much of it do you actually use? If the answer is “most of it, every day”, $139 is fair value and nothing here replaces it. If it is “keyword checks and the odd competitor look”, you have been paying suite prices for a sliver, and $35 inside the agent you already have open covers the sliver.

Where each one wins

ContextBolt SEO wins on
  • A quarter of the entry price

Semrush starts at $139 a month, and the plan with AI-search tracking starts at $199. This is $35 flat, whichever part of it you use.

  • The answer arrives in your agent

Ask in the Claude or Cursor window you are already in. No dashboard to learn, no report to find, no export step between the data and the work.

  • Research persists as files

Every finding writes to a ./seo-findings/ folder and the next lookup leads with what changed. Semrush reports live in Semrush, and cancelling ends your access to them.

Semrush wins on
  • Far more than SEO

PPC and ad research, competitor traffic intel, social, content tooling and local listings. ContextBolt SEO is research and audits, and nothing else.

  • Rank tracking and a real crawler

500 keywords tracked daily on the entry plan, across 5 sites, plus a scheduled site crawler. There is no equivalent here at any price.

  • Built for a team to report from

Projects, scheduled reports and a mature dashboard several people can work in. The SEO Board is one shareable page, no seats, no white-label.

Which one is for you?

Pick by the job

Tick what you actually need. Every line already shows which tool wins it, so this works with or without the ticking.

4 of these 10 point to ContextBolt SEO, 5 to Semrush. Tick the ones that are true for you.

ContextBolt SEO vs Semrush: FAQs

Is ContextBolt SEO a Semrush alternative? +
For the research half, yes. Keyword volume and difficulty, SERPs, domain and competitor analysis, backlinks, and page and site audits all live in ContextBolt SEO for $35 a month. It is not an alternative to the rest of Semrush: there is no rank tracker, no scheduled crawler, no PPC toolkit and no team reporting. If you use those, Semrush is not replaceable by this.
How much cheaper is it than Semrush? +
Semrush's entry SEO plan is $139 a month, or $117.33 a month billed annually. ContextBolt SEO is $35 a month flat for 1,000 lookups, with a 7-day free trial that starts with 100 trial credits and requires a card. If you need Semrush's AI-search prompt tracking, that starts on the $199 Starter plan, where ContextBolt SEO includes AI visibility at its base price. Pricing was checked against Semrush's official pricing page on August 24, 2026.
Is the data as good as Semrush's? +
Not identical. ContextBolt SEO runs on DataForSEO, so the numbers are directional and decision-useful rather than Semrush first-party figures, and Semrush's keyword database is larger. For deciding what to write and who you are up against, the estimates are plenty. For the deepest competitive analysis, Semrush wins and this does not pretend otherwise.
Can I use Semrush inside Claude or ChatGPT? +
Yes. Semrush ships an official MCP server, with a native ChatGPT connector, but it is a feature of a paid plan rather than a cheaper way in. That specific head-to-head is the ContextBolt SEO vs Semrush MCP comparison.
Can I run both? +
Yes, and plenty of people should. Keep Semrush for rank tracking, the crawler and anything you report from, and run ContextBolt SEO alongside it for cheap day-to-day research inside your agent with the findings saved to your project. They do not conflict, and the numbers come from different indexes so they will not match exactly.
